The Supremae Coart Declared the "Trust Claaxe" Void. Niw York, Nov. 8. Justice Law rence's decision, in which he upheld the "trust clause" in the will of the late Samuel J. Tilden, was to-day re verstd by the general term of the supreme court. The will in the thirty-fifth clause provided for the establishment ef libraries in this city and other places, but according to to day's ruling, this bequest, by reason of legal t.chnicalities. is void. Mr. Tilden in the disputed clause, directed the formation of a corporation to be known as the "Tilden Trust," and gave his residuary estate for that pur pose. Should the trust nut be incor porated during the lifetime of two of his nieces, whom be uamad, the residue was by his executors to be ap plied to such educational and chari table purposes as in their judgment would render the widest and most substantial benefit. George H. Til deu, a nephew, attacked the validity of this section, aril the supreme court sustains the contest on the points ot the indefiniteness of the provisions. IDAHO'S AMBITION. Twenty years ago there reamed over plains and mountains of the West nearly 8,000,000 buffaloes. To day there are less than 500 head in existence. The Vigilant, it is said, was built in Baltimore, Md,, during the very first years of our national independence, making her upward of 110 years old, She was ot the "iJal- timore clipper" class, so famed many years for speed, and must have been a wonder and a beauty when launched. Washington Post, How often is the word 'limited' oeen after the name of many great stock companies, but how seldom docs the average reader understand its im port," said 15, Elwood Kelley, the real estate agent. "I have been surprised to hare peo ple ask me whether that meant that only a given quantity of stock cor.ld be issued by the company' displaying the word ou its proepectus. "Formerly a member of a stock company doing business was responsi ble for the entire indebtedness of that co a) pan y should all other sourscs of securicy fail to satisfy the demands of creditors. In Scotland some years ago a bank failed for about $1,000,000. There was but one really wealthy director of that organization, end to him only could the creditors look for the satisfaction of their demands. He had practically to pay every cent of the less. Such was the law. Cases of this kind were quite ctmmoD, and men of wealth avoided connection with concerns which they could not absolutely control, bnt in which they could so easily sink their fortunes. "Then an amendment to the law was made by limiting the liability of the directors and stockholders in a concern to the amount they had to in vested. The law, in order to protect those wbo dealt with companies of this class, made it obligatory that the word "limited" should be connected with the names of such organizations and given equal publicity with, the company's title on all oeeasions. "Id England and Scotland this law is complied with very generally, but in the United States such limitations have become so widely the rule that it is looked npon as a matter of course, and only a very few large con cerns are now seen with 'Limited' at tached to their names, but though comparatively occasionally used it is sufficient to puzzle a good many peo ple who read it." Ouida Is Not Polite. Ouida spends much time at the Langham when she is in London. Not long since a young American girl. Miss W., of New York, called upon her at the hotel with a letterjof intro duction. After waiting some time a straticely dressed figure rushed into the room. Every color of the rain bow appeared in her cosluie, and her head was decorated with a circlet of maDy colored bright ribbons. This bizarre creaturo stalked up to our American girl, and in a very brusque manner said: "Do you want to see mc?'' "I have a letter of introduc tion to you." "You are an American I know it by your bold stare," was OuiJa's polite reply. "And I know you to be a circus rider from your outlandish costume, and so I 'yen good morning and dccliue acquaintance." v ish your Lisroln and the So nth. A pasjage in the "Life o: Lincoln," to be found in the November Century, shows as nothing else can, how treat a friend was lost to the South when Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. It Is the first publication ever made of the draft of a message and procla mation which the President submitted to his Cabinet on February 5. 18G5. In it he proposed the pamnt of four hundred millions as a.i indemnity te slave-holders, complete pardon for political offenses, and the release of confiscated property except under certain circumstances. Such mag namity was, however, too much for his councilors, who "unanimously disapproved." Along uith the docu ment ia given a full account of this best kept of Cabinet secrets. rxiEtn sF.RVicrs.
