LEE In this c;ty, on Hondav, Oct. 21, to the wife of of I'rof. W. 11. Lee, a by. MAKIUEU. I i at the approaching session of congress the members perforin their work faithfull it will be one of the most important and useful sessions of that body held since the reconstruction days. There are many questions of unusual interest and moment, which will come up for settlement. First, there will be an unusual number of contested election cases. They will occupy considerable time and members will have op portunity to expend the wind of their eloquence on them, so that they may afterwards settle down to the hard pan of business. After the election cases there will be made u powerful effort by those in- j terested to get congress to subsid ize lines of South American steam ers. Much will be heard, and that for weeks, about the vital impor tance of developing our trade with South America. That no one denies, since our states have traded with themselves ti'l they are fully supplied with goods of domestic manufacture, and a for eign outlet must be Bought. The question to be decided is: Should that outlet be obtained by the co-operation of private capitalists r by subsidies f'om congress? As to the surjilus, there will not be so much of it as there was, no longer enough to be a howling menace to the fur ther continuance of the nation. The last congress towards its close increased largel' the appropria tions for next year, as was rendered necessary, and these will probably be made still creater. The pension list will be revised and classified. Kejarding the tariff a prominent republican says that hit party has pledged itself to re vise the le venue duties, and is therefore bound to do so. A bill is promised to be introduced in favor of "penny postage" by some one who overlooks the fact that wo already have penny postage. It Tould be half-penny postage if letters were to be carried through the mails for one cent. As to who will be speaker of the house, there seems to be two cf three candidates, each of whom are considered by tkeir friends to be moderately sure of securing the position, bat there is just as liktly to be a surprise over this selection as there was in the appointment of a successor to the lamented Pension Conimis fiioner Tanner. Thk sophomores of Harvard college have chosen a colored student as class orator, which has caused a storm of indignation among the bloods and swells of that old institution of learning. The name of the colored orater is Clement J. Morgan. He is a son of a former slave, nov.' living in West Washington, D. C, where the young man was born, and at tended and graduated from the High school, his ultimate object being to earn money enough to go to Harvard, lis entered Harvard in the fall of 1SS. He won a prize for oratory l.it year by reciting Carl Schurz's oration on the "Emancipation Proclamation." lie is not generally known to the c!a.-s and this f.i;'t is the chief reason why he was nut regarded as 1 formidable eo::if.etitor for cla-s 1 orator.
