Kate Field Bays "I don't fight, 1 argue." Probably a great many men would consider an army of bayonets and swords less to be feared than the single sharp weapon Miss Field wages. The , Chicago Prairie Farmr complains that, even with the great abundance of the strawbeny crop iff the south and its consequent plentifolness in that city and cheapness that it is still higher. The bottom of the boxes continues to raise it says. Sprixgkield, Illixois, boasts of a colored lady inhabitant, who in spired such faith in her ability as a faith cure healer that she gather ed an audience of 500 persons to see her change water into wine recently. It i3 not recorded that any of the audience b-came intoxi cated on the wire. It is a matter of congratulation that the contract far the heavy iron clad coast defense vessel, for the United States navy, has been awarded to the ship builders in San Francisco thus establishing the fact that the Pacific coast stands ahead in ship building as well as other industries. It is said that the White House mail averages 1000 letters per day. As a vast majority of these are applications for office it can be sur mised to what an extent the pres-' ent method of public patronage draws upon the energy and endur ance of the incumbent of the presidential chiar. It is time that all of this was changed and a more common sease method of doing business was adopted. Queen Victoria has been made the subject of a demand from Dhuleep Sing, the deposed Indian Prince for the restoration of his kingdom or at least of the famous Kohinoor diamond. He patheti cally writes to her: "It will be useless for me to demand the restoration of my kingdom, swin dled from me by your Christian government, but which I hope shortly, by the aid of Providence, to ietake from my robbers. But my diamond, the Kohinoor, I un derstand, is entirely at ysrar own personal disposal. Therefore, be lieving your majesty to be 'the most religious lady' that your subjects pray lor every Sunday, I do not hesitate to ask that this gem be restored to me or else that a fair price be paid for it to me out of your privy purse." The Prairie Farmer, of Chicago, which ought to be informed on the subject says that the "twine trust" does not exist. Its editor in a recent address to a farmer's association said : "In relation to the twine trust, there is none now. The original combination broke into two parts, several firms hav ing, from the irst, refused to join. Two of the great selfbinder firms of the country own their own plants and make their own twine. Another of the great binder firms controls the output of a factory. The fair presumption is that the firms operating independently, make as good an article as possible for inferior twine operates against the working integrity of a machine and it is really more costly in the end, to the farmer, than twine that will run smoothly, and stand the tension required." In the course ef further remarks he said that the controversy over biading-twine would result in good, as it would stimulate the production of a native fibei that would meet the requirement of the trade. The association which lie addressed, however, adopted a resolution to the effect that farmers Mere re Icommended not to purchase bind ing twine until the price was placed at a reasonable rate. Bisnoi' Potter in his recent ad dress in Kew York at the Centen nial celebration took the ground that there is a steadily deteriorat ing process in almost all the de partments of oflicial and private life, and that the tone of public and private morals in distinctly 1 4 i ' ... ... - s -Tg-c ;:fi':;vri.y"??z'iyii!'X'&'t nv i.iw.gl i'a?'"yrLiTiii i n m ' " - ... - - : 1 ' ' -tmi - I -- ri-c-----. ., ., ... - . I iA s lower than it was in the days of Washington and his immediate successors. The public and pri rate records of the country does not bear out the opinion of the distinguished orator, for those records say that instancesof breach of public faith and peculations in office were as frequent in that day as in this. The glamour that is always thrown around the old days of puritan purity cannot cover up the Benedict Arnolds of Berola- tionary times. The Chronicle thinks that when we come to an examination of the private morals of the 'country as compared with those of the last century Bishop Potter stands absolutely alone in asserting that there is any deteri oration. Every writer who has touched upon this subject in modern times is of the opinion that the average morality of the people of the United States is higher than it ever was at any period of the nation's history, and that the diffusions of intelligence has been accompanied by a quickening of the moral sense of the country. Professor Bryce, who, in spite of some errors, is a careful and pain staking observer, has paid the highest possible compliment to the morality of the American people, dec'aring it to be brighter than that of any nation in the world, and Ins assertions may be placed with all confidence against the pesfiiaistic views of Bishop Potter.
