Said opin ion i backed by the eminent physicians Hamilton and Spitzka. I remember i-ouiewherc between tuirtv-nve ana lorty vears ago a neighbor of ours in Illinois had a dog go mad. as we call it, and went where his children were play ing and bit lour ot them, and passed on, making a tour of about thirty-live miles before he was run down and killed. Daring that time he bit quite a number of peo ple, dogs and other stock. All the the dogs thus bitten that were not killed right away were tied up, and invariably went mad in a short time. Among the people bitten was an Uncle of mine, by the name of Elijah Clark, of Belle Air, Crawford - county, Illinois, and four cildren by the name of Burke, who sent over to Terre Haute, Indiana, for an old lady who had a mad stone. She applied the stone to the wound and they all got well without any of the patients having hydrophobia. Another lady, who had just had her cloak bitten went home and sewed up the rent made by the dog and bit off the thread with her teeth, not having any idea that by eo doing she had re ceived some of the poison, conse quently her imagination could nave nothing to do in the case, In a few days she went into spasms, from which she never recovered, and it was pronounced by the phy sicians a genuine caBe of hydrophobia. i saw Chas. Liuadry machinery, Bells, brass goods etc. Morphine Habit. The morphine habit has became so prevalent in Berlin that it has become necessary for the Government to adopt preventive measures. It is said that women are particularly ad dicted to the use of the drug and that ia is no uncommon sight to see one of them produce a syringe in public and take a hypodermic injec tion. A liw has recently been passed regulating the sale of morphine, b which druggists are forbidden to sell the drug except en the prescription of a doctor residing in the district, j The prescription is not returned to the purchaser, who must procure a new one upon eyery occasion. Four Hnndred Armed Men Take Possession of a Town. New Orleans, May 7. The Times-Democrat. Lafayette spec ial says: Four hundred armed men, under General Alexander Declautte, of St. Martin's parish, roue into Lafayette this morning, took possesion of the town, and demanded the resignation of a negro justice of the peace and negro constables. The lutter had disap peared, but the former complied with their demand. The regulators, pretending to have heard that Vigcaux, a promi nent republican who had bten sug gested oy Congressman Coleman, as United States marshal of the western district of Louisiana, had furnished arms to the negroes, called oo that gentleman, who is now town marsliul of Lafayette, discussed with him the matter of his having attempted to vote negroes at the election last Monday. They informed him that their purpose was to prevuit the negroes from voting, and they intended to enforce their views on the subject, intimaticg that the best thing that Vignaux could do was to delist from any further efforts on behalf of negro sunrage. Vignaux stated that be was at the polls Monday, performing his duty under the law. This statement being satisfac tory, the regulators concluded to allow Vignaux to live awhile longer. J( exists by probation. so to speak. The regulators aed authorities finally atreed that an election should be beld next Moaday for municipal officers of Lafajette, at which only white men shall vote. As this election will not be legal, the nan es of those receiving a majority of the votes cast will be seat to the governor tor appoiBi- ment. GRANGE NOTES.
