New Yoi k TCnc3. Oi.e t the means proOsed to se tle tlic tislieiirs and other diffi cutties between the Uutteil Stat3 and Cauatia is political union be twecn the two countries. This means bimply tbat the several provinces nowconst'tuting the Do minion ot Canada Miould become States of the Union, and subject to the Constitution of tbe Unite a States. This would involve an ad dition .o tbe House of Represeola tives, a certain number of new Senators, und a substantial enlarge ment or the .hlcctoiiil College. In ; these latter facts may be feund the chief difficulty from the United States point of view, lor it is per fectly man.tcst tbat the admission of Canada would have a disturbing effect upon party lines in Congress. If Canada were l, be admitted to the Union to-merrow, there could not be leas than four new States, and possibly five. Thus : PopuL.t'o'i Aooc. Ontario 2,2. 0 Ov3 Quebec ,. j, ,U00 Nova Sco.ia, N ,' Biui'sa ieUand Prince Ed.-.ad Is'ar(! 1 ,000.000 Manitoba and Noiihwc ;i CC0 ot J TDtal 5,1. Iu point of population OutMir would stand sixth among the Stares of the Union, namely. New York. Pennsylvania. Ohio, illinoi, Missouri, Ontario. It would thcre f re have at lesst. tiKeea or sixteen Presidential Electors upon tb: present bas:s, thirteen or fourlccn Heprcsentativcs iu the House anC two Seuut,oi. Quebec would come in ou an equality of population witti such Slates as Virginia and Tennes see. It would therefore have about eleven Presidential Electors, U'.ue He pit sen tali ves and two Sena tors. Tl:e Maritime Provinces might all grouped into on province, bur there would be some question about this, as Nova Scotia has twice as large u popula tion as uuocie isiana, ana uoii' than three times as large as Delu ware, and New Brunswick has more than twice as large a popula tim UQ IlftlaWBr lnr n-nnninr mem an, tae state would ue as largo as Maryland or Scuth Coio una, and consequently with at least eight Presidential Electors and six Representatives and two senators. Manitoba would hare three Electors, a Representative aid two Senators, Here, tbta, is the pi.'iiical re rull at least thirtj-toven Pi evi dential Electors. twenty nine Uetresenta'tivcs and eight Srnatois. This miht have a distuibiog effect upon party lines in tbe United biaies, and no doubt many blus tering politicians, who think more ot power than the greatness and siiiiii well being of the country, uu.U have grave misgivings in regant to the propriety ot raun'ng any links. Others would argue thai the United States is big enough as it is, and to enlarge its bounds over such a vast area as Canada would be to complicate the problems which already present difficulties sufficiently serious. Sucb objections are constantly urged bj Americans in public and Srivate, and jet it cannot be oubted tbat in tbe heart of every intelligent and patriotic American there is al way to be found a iuik ing cesire to extend the swsy of tbe Stars and Stripes over tbe hole continent a sort of feeling tbat Canada belongs tc tbe Ameri can system, and that it would only be in accordance with tbe eternal fitness of things that the principles ot ".ne great Itepublic should pre vail all over this continent of North America. The real difficulty in the way o union will not be feund in the United Sutes;they mut inevitably ue tound in Canada, and tr:e prob lem is: What will Canada do bout it? What is her dcetioT? ia dealing with sucb a question borore an American public the first d ffi;u 4y is to make am intelligett citizen of tbe United States under stand whv Canada wants tokeeu out of the Union. The advantaj ot political union are so oovioii" that tha first thought is, "Why don't tbty couioin?" Canada was settled originally that is. A road master in Michigan was planning how lo fix a bad piece of ruad so it would be passible, when along came a traveler who answered bis difficult?. He said: "Ifvou will Dut down a drain tile under tbe middle ot this road bed and then take a scraper and round up the drive way you will make good road." Ot course it was necessary to lay his tiling so me drain had an outlet. The idea was adopted and put in practice, and the result was that the road bed oyer the tile drain wa as dry as possible. A Fortunate Dratgrgist. Mr. Edwin W. Joy a prosperous druggist on the corner of Stockton and Market streets, in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling iu wealth the medi cine kings of the country. But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that he has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth the cause. It seems that about seven years ago aa English physician, a great student of Bot any, located in this city. Ills practice was not extensive, aud yet tho few cases that came to him attracted no little atten tion. His great success seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders and vitiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself. After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom tbe secret, and copying all the prescriptions he had filled for tho erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis."- lie discov ered running all through tho prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couplo of vegetableextracts indigenous to California so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate tho suspicion that they were the active principles involved. So certain, however, was Mr. Joy that be had discovered the secret that ho embod ied the new elements in a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise the taste, and put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im mediately the same stories came back of its astonishing effects, and the mystery was solved, and the talk it. has created has already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the coast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. & JF. Examiner, Pimples ob tho Pace Der o' ? an impure state of thebIond and looked upon by many witk sus:iei.i i.
