A large force of detectives are scouring Lake view this morning in tbe hope of finding a clue to tne mysterious disappearance of Dr. 1 . 11. Cronin So lar no success has attended their efforts. All the facts obtain fable are that Dr. P. H. His friends express the belief that ne has been foullv dealt with. A stranger took the doctor oil lust night, it is related, ostensibly to attend an injured man in Lake view, ince then Cronin has not been seen, and inquiry fails ta bring to lij:ht any injured man such as described. To-day a trunk was found on tbe prairie near Lake view, containing a mass of bloody cotton similar to that Cronin car ried in his surgeon's case, and some hair, said to resemble in color the doctor's locks. A two column interview with Ur. Cronin, in a printed form prepared by himse!l", was given to the newspapers to night by his friends. It related various circumstances, purporting that a conspiracy of some sort ex isted to injure Cronin in reputation or person. noes Not Know Him. Boston, May 6. Jidgar L. The new torpedo boat which the Herreshofl's are building for the Navy Department at Bristol, R. I., is fast nearing completion and is expected to be ready for trial in another month or six weeks. She is 137 feet long, 14$ feet beam and S feet depth of hold, with a drauhgt of 3 feet $ inches on the load line. She is t carry a secondary battery of two six-pounder rapid-tiring gnus, - and the contract calls for a speed of twenty knots per hour on the official trial. This won der of marine architecture was de signed by Nathaniel G. Herrestioff aid his blind brother, John B., tbe famous designer, and , builder of tume of tho,. fastest steam yatchts ia the world, and they - confidently Apeck a speed ot twenty-three knots with the new boat. The yebsel will be propelled by twin screws attached to steel shafts extending from either side of the stern, connected with two quadruple expansion engines with five cylinders, calculated t" develop ICOO-horse power. The vessel will be divided into eight wUer-tight compartments. The engines will be in the middle of the boat with one of the boilers for ward and the other abaft the engines, thus occupying three of the comtart ments. The quarters for the officers will be aft and those for the crew forward just the reverse of the ar rangements in the monitors. There will be no deck houses, hence the craft will not be a comfortable one in the tropics, nor in summer time in this latitude, notwithstanding that she is to tic fitted with several patent ventilating boilers to supply the quarters with fresh air. Two large torpedo shutes are fitted on either side of the bow, to placed as to be protected by the turtleback of the forward part of the boat. The pilot-house will be a small tower just forward of the smokepipe, while another tower near the stern will be for the lookout. The eon tract price for the new boat is $S2, 750, with a condition of $1500 extra for each quarter of a knot made in excess of twenty-three knots. SUNDAY SCHOOL C0HVES1I0N. Pastors, Sunday school superintendents and all interested in the work are requested to give this notice as wide publicity as possible. E. W. Allkk, President. Amelie Itives Tries tbe Pig; Puzzel. Washington Critic. Through the half-open door in the Hotel Arno the murmur ef a 'ow, musical voice floated into the hall way. The door opened into an elegant apartment, decorated with rich drapery and bijouterie that gave the place an air of voluptuous re line. ment. Seated on a sott Turkish rng of luxurious squaphiness a wraith figure sits: the face of exquisite sweetness, yet with an uncanny brilliancy about the eyes, is lit up by the fitful glow of the firelight. Upon the little hand rests a head whose gold en meshed tresses fall a glittering shower over a sculpturesque arm, and in the other is a dainty circular box with grooves of scrupulous exactness. through which brilliant colored globules wheel aud circle iu bewilder- inar mazmess. "My God," says the fair girL with a smothered sob. "I cannot do it I cannotl" She gives the dainty circular box a swift whirL gases at it with a look of intense determination, and, drawing herself up to the hight of her scornful stature, cast it lrom ner into tne nre as if it were a thing too low for her superb contempt. For an instant her face rests in her hands; then with trembling steps she propels her slen der figure over to the nearest table, sits down and writes another novel. But all the same jou may be cer tain that a stenographic report ef that conversation would make what the late Horace Greeley was woot to call "mighty interesting reauing." Private Secretary Halford says that Gen. Harrison is in as good health as be has been for twenty years. Mr. Halford is in a position to know about tbe President's health, aud of course we must be lieve what he says, and yet oie has only to stand in the White House door and listen te the conversation of those who have just shaken hands with the President to dis cover that nioe out of every ten of them believe him to be a sick mo. It is to be hoped that it will turn oat to be one of those numerous in stances in which "appearances are deceptive." Secretary Noble has given orders by telegraph for a rigid in vestigation of the charges, made in the dispatches from Oklahoma, that Government officials took ad vantage of their official positions to secure desirable town lots and homesteads before the bona tide settlers were allowed to enter tbe Territory, aDd he says that if he can help it no person shall hold a foot of ground in that territory 'or a claim that :s not open and above board, and entirely tree from even a suspicion of fraud. Senators Suerraau and Spoouer leave for Europe this week. They will remain abroad fc-veral months. Several names have been piojii nc'utly mentioned Ir the vacancy on the Supieme Court bench, auioiif; them being Gen. J. A. J. Crcswel!, of Maryland, auJ Mr. J. L. Webster, of Nebraska, but those closest to the adniiDistia'.iou seem to think that Attorney Geuersl MiKcr will be the fortunate man. Several Pension cases that were rejected ti? th-r late administration have been reopened and ruuted by Assistant Secretary liuvKcy. They all turn en the question tt whether the injuries were it-ceivud bv the applicant while in the "line of dutv." Gen. Bussey ho d, sub stantially, in all tbe decisions he has made, tiat any injury receives! by a soldier in any manner, except through his wu neg.'tct er wilful carclessocss. between the dates of his enlistment and discharge may be considered k occuriing in tho "line of doty." Gen. Huey seems to believe in ;ivii)g the poor soldier, instead ot the wealthy Gov ernment the benefit of any doubt that may arise in considering bit claim tor a pension. And, iiko Gen. lUnisen, he is opposed to using apothecary's scales to weigh the merits of the Union veterans. Political circles were consider able excited last week by the pub lication of a lefer written by Col. Dudlev to a friend in Indiana who bad asked tbe Col. to assist him in getting a certain appointment. The following paragraph in tho tetter as the important oae: "Perhaps there is no one man in the country who has doae as much for Gen. Harrison during the last twenty years as myself, but be cause our Democratic friends down iu Indianapolis have started the hue acd cry on me, brother Ben. does not seem to feel that he can afford to recegnze me as an acquaintance and consequently I don't take diancr at the White House as might b; expected." Republicans here have found it bard to believe that tbe President has snubbed Col. Dudley, and yet they find it difficult to place any other construction upon the letter recently published.
