Old Virginia wants an immi gration boom, hence the announce ment that an immensely rich gold mine has been discovered within her borders. i Pacific Coast prunes in the New York market take the lead over all other kinds, having lately been decided to be superior to the best French prunes. The announcement that the raisin crop of Spain is a failure, is not taken as sack cloth and ashes news by the raisin producers of California. The California crop will probably rais in the market. In California they are discussing the question proposed by Frison Director Shattuck, to utilize the waste power of the American river at Folsom in running an ice factory to produce ice foi tha f?an Francisco market. One of the most sensible monu ments to the memory of the dead, is to be erected in the name of the I late Thomas J. Totter, of the Union Tacific railroad. It is to be in the building and equipment of a hospi tal for sick and inained railroad men, to be located somewhere in the state of Iowa. Shoddy, as ever' one knows, is a bogus wool made of old woolen stuffs treated by machinery. The cloth made of it is passed off by shoDkeeDers as woolen cood?, and a - therefore the material should be rated as wool. It is understood that the importers mean to appeal the case to the Supreme couit. Should the decision of the District court be overruled the admission of shoddy cloths as worsteds would seriously affect the low grade cloaking and overcoat-makers, who would hardly be able to compete with the cheap German material. The question of whether gardens shall be made, front yards decorat- ed .shade trees planied.for the town cow to pasture in and destroy, is being agitated by CorvalJis. Al bany has already agitated, voted, and emphatically pronounced the dictum that the cow must go. Legislative action was invoked to make the going of the gentle bovine who raiseth yard gates and dis porteth at will among choice shrubbery, a sure thing, but stili the gentle bovine aforesaid geeth not, whereat the people cry how long, how long, Oh city council must we witness the daily spolia tion that tins herd of town cows are making. Apparentlyoursister city will arrive at the end before we do. 1889 qqqqVMq 1889 Atav Uudsr the uew mauAxemeat ol- 1889 SPRING AND SUMMER r 1 an. The sheriff invites six persons besides the surgeon. It is made a misdemeanor for any news paper to publish anything more . about the execution than the mere j tacts. i Accobii.u to the lhlisboro Indrpendent the people of Wash ington county look upon the county assessor as a public enemy, or they have forgotten the oid time hospi tality that Oregon was wont to be credited with, as they utteily re fused to give him food and lodging for love or money. If that kind of thing is to become the ruie all oyer the state it will be necessary for assessors to fit themselves out like recent threshing outfits with kitchen appurtenances to carry along with them. ; The fertility and desirability of i the Oklahoma lands are teing made the question of discussion by eastern newspapers. 1'robably somewhat of the powers of the God of jealousy tips the jens of very many who wiite so derogatory of ' them. There can be no question of the productive qualities of those lands and of their desirabil ity, but undoubtedly their value has been greatly exagerated and j the excitement growing out of the effort to possess them unwarranted. Human beings are usually imbued with a keen spirit of pursuit for what they see their fellow beings striving for. pURp BROWS LEGHORN EGGS FOR (or setting no be had (or $2 per Betting (thirteen, by apply in j to F.
