Tjtelaw'sueiay begetsiui patience nrhile a rapacious trust puts tugar up to a point fitly described as ex tortionA trust that is really a conspiracy against the rights of all buyers. Good roads, hard and smooth, contribute very largely to farm profits, besides being a means of grace in lessened provocation to swearing over broken harness or vehicle. Pibhaps it would be good for farmers to restrict labor through one season to about eight hours a day by way of regulating prices somewhat in proportion to cost of production. Tue Uzar of Russia leads a life of continual dread of some one dropping a dynamite bomb into his carriage. If it were not just for the name of it an average Ameri can would rather drive a swill cart, than ba Czar of all the Kussias. ne1 officials did was" to enforce' th Sunday law.' They allowed hotelB, livery "stables, barber shops, and drug stores to keep open, but stopped the sale of cigars, tobacco, bread and ice-cream. Next, the bad boys were looked after. A proclamation was issued ordering all boys under the age of eighteen to keep off the streets after 8 o'clock at night. It occurred to the ladies that while they had the power the tobacco evil ought to be dealt with, but the city attorney told them that squirting tobacco juice over the sidewalk came under the head of personal liberty and could not be interfered with. They then tried moral suasion, and appointed a committed to visit every tobacco chewer in town. This course was completely successful, and there was no further trouble about the sidewalk?. For many years very little attention had been paid to the streets, and the property own ers were unwilling to be taxed for new pavements. The lady mayor and her council decided that tbey would have good streets and side walks. They passed ordinances, made contracts, superintended the work in person, and successfully fought the injunctions and other suits brought against them by the property owners in the courts. Now that they have survived a year of petticoat rule the citizens of Oskaloosa are not inclined to make fun of it. They say that their town has prospered, 'and has made an enviable reputation for good morals, law, and order. In this particular instance the female suf frage experiment in Kansas has turned out very satisfactorily. But one swallow does not make a sum mer, and it will take more than one Oskaloosa to revolutionize the world. The free use of pistols and the exhibition of violence in Oklahomas is not a credit to American civiliza tion. Frontier ruffianism is past, and the settlement of that region at the muzzle of a pistol in the hands of every settler will make it a place to be shunned for yeirs to come. Gold coin is at a premium of 64 per cent in the Argentine Republic, An over issue of paper ha3 broken down the finances of the country. In this country the finances are in eood enough a condition to be let atone. A cold dollar, a silver dollar, or a greenback dollar are each a full and equal equivalent, a condition of things which needs no further tinkering. Advices from every part of the territory of Oklahoma indicate that every1 available quarter section of land is already taken along ti e ne of the Atchison Tailroad ar.d on the stage tiails which run from Guthrie to Kinglisher and from Oklahoma to Fort Reno. The oc cupants "f the soil have taken possession of their claims by pitching tint, and in many cases erecting rude lo cabins or frame structures. The hunt for Tascott, the mur.I erer of old Millionaire .nell if Chicago, has not been more fruit less than the search for William R.Foster Jr., who stole $192,000 of the gratuity fund of the New York Produce Exchange. Five thousand dollars reword was offered for the capture of this fellow, but not a trace of him has been discovered. His father, like the father of Defaulter Eno, made good about one-third of his son's stealings. HARB1CD. TOWELLINGS This is a year when politics and politicians will take a rest, and the energies of the people will be ex pended in the development and advancement of the interestes of the country instead of stump speeches and political demonstra tions A marked business activity will be the result. Especially will this be realized in Albany and vicinity, wnere railroad construc tion, the erection of new manu factures, and other public enter- olv fiiriDlovment to many men and place in circulation many thuisands of dollars. The non-arrival of the Mononga hela at Samoa has caused consid erable uneasiness in naval circles. The ship has now been out over sixty days and no word of her arrival has been received. The Monongahela left San Francisco February 13th loaded with stores, and in addition carried a large deck load of coal for the use of the fleet, now unfortunately destroyed. The distance from San Fr?ncisco to Apia is 4303 miles, and with favorable winds, such as prevail at this season, she ought to make the voyage in at least forty days.
