The necessity for immediate action in buttling with the obnox ious pests that have already secured so stioug a hoU in many of the oichards of Oreien, prompts the "State Board ? Horticulture," created by the last Legislature, Dd which met and organized but yes terday, t issue this bulletin, its nrst act toward carrying out tke objects for which it has beea created. The information contained io.tb.is bulletin is of pecessiiy brief, and somewhat cru1e,Tor time will be require. i to suable the Board to secure that information from prac- ticle exDeriaients that shall be of most value t the orchardisu iu parricu'sr, and to the horticulturist in general . THE C0DL1N MOTH. The Codlin moth is with'.utques tiou tho insect that needs to bo looked after first, as jt is without doubt the worst pest ever intro duced into the State. It is need less to write at length about tho ravages of this enemy of the pear, apple and quince; thosa who have suffered from bis acquaintance know him well; those who have been so fortunate as to escape his acquaintance will do well to use the one ouace of preventive and keep him out, aud so hare no need for the prund of cure. It is only by "eternal vigilance" that Ore gon's reputation for the producing the "big red apple1' sound and tree irom worm?, "can be maintained." We therefore appeal not ccly to that first law of nature, "self pres ei vation," but to that nobler one th-tt st:rs the heart and prompts to nobler deeds that the entire Stare may be benefitted thereby. KEMEDIES AGAINST CODLIN MOTHS. There are two mods cf fighting litem generally made use of one is . prevent the hatching of the eng. n'r the killing of the young worm while working into the fruit; the ether is the catching of the worm in traps as it is escaping from the fruit, or by having tVj fruit eaten by hogs as soou as it drops from the tree and before the worm escapes. The first mode is witkout doubt the most successful, aud is also tho least expeosive. This is accomplished by spraying the trees with London purple or Paris green, using one pound of either to one hundred and fifty gallons of water. Paris green is a compound of arsenic and copper. It is t far more powerful poison than arsenic alone, and it not sclu bio in water, hence it will remain uch longer on the trees. London purple is another arsenical com pound. It is tho residue from the manufacture of aniline dye. and contains lime, arseaious acid aud carbon ar eons matter. It is soluble, more adhesive and less poisonous than Paris green, and tluie'ore is to bo preferred. It is better to wet the powder thoroughly and make a paste before putting it ipto the vessel ot water that it may not form lumps. The spray is caused by forcing the liquid by means f a force pump through a fine per forated aozzel, ma'te especially for the purpose. The finer it is the less liquid wilt be required. Tha ianportaat ibiug is to scatter the spray on all the fruit. WHEKTO SPRAY The Codlin moth soon afur the fruit sets, lays ker ejigs upon the calyx end of the young fruit. The crnb as Boon as hatched eats its way into the center of the young frnit, aud there e rowing with its growth works its mischief, la its early state the youne fruit is erect, its calyx upwards, and the least particle of poisoned water falling upon it is sufficient to deatroy tho young worm when it attempts to eat its way into the fruit; therefore, the beat and most opportune time for spraying the trees is soon after tho fruit is set, and when it ia about the size of a small pea. experience te acnes, nowever, that it is not safe to depend open the one early spraying to accomplish the results soukht for. whether cemin from a second and perhaps third crop, which many affirm and others deny, or from those that from soma cause have not matured as rapidly aa others, still tke facts remain that in many places the Codlin inoth does not stinc the fruit and lay the ergs until later in the season; therefore, to obtain the best results the sprayiag should be continued with an interval of two weeks until tho first of July, and eye later than this on some late varities. Care should be observed that vegetables are not sprayed with these mixtures, and no animals be allowed to eat the grass that lias been saturated with the spray. THE GR1EN APHIS. The use of the above mentioned sprays will be of great value to the orchard in not only ridding it of the Codling moth, but they will also be found beneficial in freeing it from many other obnoxious insects and fungi that are a source of great an noyanoe and often of grea&idanser to the trees and fruit There are a number of mixtures that will operate successfully in exterminating the fc.-een aphis or apple tree louse, and c-n be used as most convenient to he procured: First. Take i pouna borax soap, i pint kerosene oil; mix in 2J gallons iiot water. j Second. I pound of whale oil soap dissolved in three gallona hot water. And still a third which is easily procured: : 1 pound of common laundry soap dissolved in sixteen -gallons of hot water. Apply any of these mixtures by means of- a spray pump where the aphis begin to show themselves. The time has arrived when every person having an orchard should be the owner of a force hump with a spray nozzel specially adapted to the work of spraying trees. vVhere one person has not sufficient use for a pump to justify him in buying one for himself alone, let him join with few neighbors and get one that will savve them alL The cost of the material and the time required in ap plying it is small. "A London- irarplerw Pnris itt'teii costs but 25 cents per pound in small quantities and pumps all complete ready lor use can be had from $14 to $34 each, according to size and car act tv for work. It is the desire of the boaid to do all they can in accomplishing the re sults sought in the enactment of the law creatine them, and to this end thev besDeak the co-operation of every person inteeited in horticul ture in Orecon. The secretary desires to secure the name of every fruit grower in Oregon, and to this end re quests that every one to whom this knowledge shall come, will send him his name and postofEce address. He also desires that all shall write him freely relative to iheir experience in combatting these common enemies of the orchardist, for it is only by an interchange of experiences that the best results can be obtained, The board will issue other bulletins rela tive to the tieatment of the wooly aphis and other important matters of interest to all'at an early day. By order of the board. ETHAN W. ALLEN. Secretary. Sun Francisco Markets. Sa- Francisco, April 23.
