President Harrison's Solution is Ap proved in the South. Wabhikotoh, April 22. Presi dent Harrison yesterday received a delegation of Southern republicans, among tbe number being several well-kaown colored men. Tbe delesratiea expressed entire ap proval of the president's selution of tbe benthern proDieno, ana torn him that his policy of appointing white men to fill offices in white districts, recognizing colored votere as far as possible through the North and thote located in tbe South by getting them positions in executive departments here, instead of nlacinir them where they would be thrown in coLtact w:th those who hate them in Southern sections, was the enly true solution there was of the race problem. The president intends to give the colored voters their luli measure of rtcoiinitiou in the distribution of GENERAL NEWS offices, but it is proposed to avoid friction in the sections of the South where there has been trouble on account of colored Federal officers, by putting v Into men in their places. In the heavy blck dis tricts of tbe South, where there are competent aid popular colored men li are indorsed for appoint ment, there will be recognition of the colored race. Colored ' men &ml no cau?e for coni;ia;nt, while all c' asses of whites are ieud in their praise of the new departure. ELECTRICITY IN 15ATT1.E. Important Part Played by the Elee tric Current on War Ship. New York Times. "Tt.e (-untiess deuces by which electricity is made applicable aWounl the new wr veesels are jimp'y marvelous." remarked a naval officer recently. "What with furnishing the lights to the vessels, electricity has also been made to serve us the motive power for i.o ead of sniull hoisting machines about the decks and below, nad now it is to be used aboard tbe Chicago for training some of the heavy main battery guns. It may surprise some persons to know, too. that nearly all these aplications of electricity aboard ship have had their ori?i from the brains of naval officers." The first general application of incandescent electric lighting to the illumination of steamships oc cured only about six years ago, but at the present time ao tramp steam er, even, is complete without it. It was thought for some time that men-of-war could not be so lighted, as tne aiscnarge oi neavy guns would destroy the incaadescent filaments. The Trenton was the first Ameri can man ot-war, aaa, in lacr, tne tiist war vessel afloat, that was lighted by electric light. Her lights were iustnlled in 1883, and at the time her system of lighting created considerable comment from foreign nayal officers. The success ol the Trenmn's experiment practi cally settled the question in naval circles. .Si ace the Trenton was given lur electric pppaiatu, the OoihIih. New Hampshire, Dolphin, Atlanta, liostou and Chicago have Utj furnished with electric-ligUt- ini: ai'paratusis, and not one of the new vessels just coming will be light d in auy other way but ly electricity. Uesides 'the advantage derived from the iii'htiuir nieces to the ship the value of the electric, seurch lights cannot be too Ir.liiv esti mated. By means of these tcuich lights the presence of a small boat can be detected at the distance of a mile from the warship on the darkest nieht. Protected by the keen eyes of these powerful electric flashes a cruiser can anchor in the vicinity of a hostile shore and detect on almost the instant the cominir of a torpedo boat within the ndim t its search flash Then, by means of machine and rapid fire guns, the cruiser can e tead herself against the smallest f foes. On some of the vessels electticity is now used to fire the guns, which mar be done bv the commanding officer en the On dire or from the figntiog tower. This may be de cidedlf advantageous when it is desired to give broadsides at a cer tain moment, at when engaged in the bombardment nf a city or for tress, liy means of eltctricity whole broadsides may be tired from tbe conning tower mere pressing ot a button. by, the Uanplaetia and C'enlealtneal, Cannot go hand in hand if we look on the dark bide of every little obstacle. Now that Piince Alexander of Battenberg has accepted tbe conse duences ot his marriage and retired into comparative obscurity for tiie moment, 'all the story of his abort though biiUixnt career will bo for gotten; but no one's lite has been nioit. full of accidents of romance, tie was adored by his army, who would have followed him to the d.-ath, aud by bis wu immediate lollowvrs, to whom be was a real hero in 'every sense of the word. Through his Servian career be was attended by a (all and handsome jager, who never left him for a moment and who op many oc casions ran great risk of losing hi own life in hii determination not to lose sight of his master. At nigbt he slept on a couch in the ante-room outside his bedroom ani at least one plot to assassinate Prince Alexander was frus' rated by his vigilance . After Prince Alex ander left Bulgaria the servant who followed bis master disappeared, and tbe solution of the mystery for mystery it always was to those who knew the Piince was then discovered in the fact that tbe handsome jager was a woman ia disguise, who, being madiy in love with Prince Alezandei, determined to devote her life to guard him from danger during his stormy reign in his Bulgarian kingdom.
