At ft o'clock this morning the boomers were alive and getting ready for crossing the Cherokee strip. There were nearly 30,000 here and they had been ordered to move in an orderly manner along the established trails. If any depredations are committed the whole line will he stopjied and the guilty ore turned back. The pro cession will be accompanied by HO to .'It! reporters on ponies. United stales Commissioner lionsell has allowed two men to construct bridges at ."alt creek and Chilli cothe creek and charge the boom ers 'S cents to i'Mss. An old fort built mi .-alt fork which has laid idle fur year w ill be brought into service. The boomers proceeded in a body with the troops in front of them. Toe sight was one not often pre sented before in America, a thous and or more settlers marching toward their homes under the reg ulations of the war department. The settlers here are ol a remarka bly good class. Most of them have comfortable outfits. Kvervbodv seems to be for himself, rather jealous and suspicious of the others than united by the bonds of friend ship. Some experienced frontiers men sav there will be no trouble of any Fort at Lisbon, while others say that it cannot be prevented. NOT A Tit IE ItlLL. McDuniels, defaulting post master at Ilarrishurg, who had been sentenced to imprisonment in the Linn count v jail, to leave his placa of close commitment and walk at wi'l about the i'v of Al- banv. It apnears that the infor niation which came before the grand jury was ill founded and hence the failure to indict the officers. Sheriff Srnallmon and ex-ieriff Smith returned home last night and were in high spirits over the outcome of the prosecution against them. As they had intended to violate no law, their friends will also be pleased that the charges against them were dismissed. OKKGON IMPROVEMENT CO. A IHvldend of One I'er Cent. The closing years of the century eem destined tu he marked by a decline of the poetic spirit. The greatest o' those who tiave made the ceotuary illustrious have, it' we may us the piii'ueo:oy of the Norse mythology, rouglii tlie p'aiiia ot' L iBliieim, llcda's utootuy leaitn, where dwell the d-ad Of those till reigning in the c;'ic Vaihalla littjrj. more can be expected Irom TeiniyVon, Ihownui, Wlnttier or Lowel. Twillnlii, like that tabled to Inive ovei inkcii t!:c S( au.lliiaviun deities, ser-ins to have lalltn Ujon the poetic r:ce. Among the younger poets wc have mauy who arc exquisite masters ot torm, but it i.-. already cleiir that iu the clos ing yeais ol this century wc are not to hear any such voices s those of G oil lie, Schiller aud Burns, who were the literary fathers of the poets ot tlnsceotury, aud marked out Le lines which they have followed. The explanation of this is pel" haps not difficult to find . Every previous period of great literary activity has beeu followed by one of comparative decline. With the close of the Augustau age, which produced such poets as Horace, Virg'.l and Ovid, Roman literature passed into a decline which proved the forerunner of its death. Few recall the names ot the successor of Dante, Petrarch und Tasso in Italian literature. Shakespeare and Miltcn were followed by a nameless crowd, and it is perhaps natural that Geothe, Wordsworth and DroADibg should be followed by Swinburne, Austiu Dobson and Audrew Lang. Moreover, this is a practical and materialistic uge, in which the geuius of the human i ace is given up to the pursuits of commerce, to invention and dis covery, to greut achievements, to the consolidation of em p: res and the subjugation of barbarous nations in Asia and Africa, to the study ot the sciences aud the solu tiou of social problems. It is not stiange, theictore, that lime ehnuld he a decline in the arts ot poetry, music, painting, sculpture aud architecture. 1 here is not to oe discerned in the pubiic '.aste any special de mand for the wik ot tin- uiastvrs in these aits. This is the uge of novels and magazine liteHtu?e, ot Gilbert and Sutiivat ras, ol iron architecture at -rowtl of cities. A "leat pcl .ouid lie born out of due time in m.c!i a or vvuile we Hare not rcauin" our Shakespeare, Milton or Words worth, wneu we arc stouin -ur Carlyle and Huskin, and rapidly forgetting the best lessons of our Emerson, we are not likely to have any ear lor another Homer or Dante. We cannot plead, however, that tlieie is a lack ot great themes for the inspiiation of the poets. The discovery md settlement of Amer ica is a ihouMind loid noblvr topic loan the 'bulit t -Eneas from burning Tioy, Hitd his stiffrriugs while liriogiug his gods to Latioin aud touixl ng the Uuui'O StuK.i .Modem Instoiy is upplyiug rich material, vihicli some lutuie Shake speare will doubiiess use to rival the fame of the Hard o: Avon. Phiiauinrjp and Cliiistiau activity aie perhaps also supplyu g ma er ials which s-.-me greater Miiton may bereatler use iu msjestic rela tion of a "Paradise Hrgain d" by the lower classes of mankind. Human life is never Jeoid of poetic elements, but for the pies ent we are thinking about things we call practical, aud have entered a period ot twilight of the poets, about which the only prophecy that needs be made is that it will not last.
