Yamhill county, Oregon, on trie

morality and brotherly love."

sympathize with his giiel-stricken
familv in this, their hour of sad

Mr. F. M, -Redfield. of this city.
is in receipt of a copy of the Spring
field (Vt.) Reporter, which con
tains an account of the brave man
lier in which his cousin, L. C.
Redfield, met his death in the re
cent railroad accident on the
Georgia Midland and Gulf road.
He bar bnen engineer on the road
for about thirty years. The Ver
mont paper recounts the affair as
follows:
When the engine left the iron
the train was moving at full speed.
Ahead, not a Brest way off, wait s
fitly foot trestle, from which the
tram would inevitably 'have been
precipitated if reached. The brave
engineer, L. C. Redfield, and his'
fireman, Walter Mahone, realized
the danger which confionted them
and the human freight depending
on them to avert it. That they
faced it manfully, heroically, en
titles them lo be at least held in
grateful memory by all who owed
anythiog to their noble sacrafice.
The might have saved themselves
at any moment from the discovery
of the accident up to the time of
the fatal plunge of the engine.
They remained at tbeir post, cool'y
and skilfully using every effort to
bring the train to a stop before the
trestle was reached. When tho
nose of the engine was almost upon
the trestle the train was saved, but
the engine toppled over and tum
bled down the embankment, turn
ing completely over. The engin
eer was frightfully injured and
lived but a short time. The fire
man was not so seriously injured,
and it was thought might recover.
The brave engineer, who so
manfully and heroically faced an
awful death rather than abandon
his post of duty, had done every
thing that a long practice and ex
perience could suggest to shut
down the engine. The reverse
lever was thrown back in the last
notch in the backward motion,
the throttle of the engine was wide
open and the air brakes were tin lit
on the driving w heels, lie could
do nothing more. And though the
terrible death of Engineer Redfield
is deeply deplored by the entire
community, without doubt his he
roism and bravery in defcus" of his
train arj her precious cargo will
be written on the sands of time in
this section down to the future
ages.

partment of agriculture, has ma-lea

sorghum. The territory in which
sorghum can be successfully grows,
according to Mr. Wiley, does not r.x

that the Indian tenitory, if it were
in possession of the whites, would he
