strip. There were nearly 30,000
here and they had been ordered to
move in an orderly manner along
the established trails. If any

Smith returned home last night
and were in high spirits over the
outcome of the prosecution against
them. As they had intended to
violate no law, their friends will
also be pleased that the charges
against them were dismissed.

the forerunner of its death. Few
recall the names ot the successor
of Dante, Petrarch und Tasso in
Italian literature. Shakespeare
and Miltcn were followed by
a nameless crowd, and it is perhaps
natural that Geothe, Wordsworth
and DroADibg should be followed
by Swinburne, Austiu Dobson and
Audrew Lang. Moreover, this is a
practical and materialistic uge, in
which the geuius of the human
i ace is given up to the pursuits of
commerce, to invention and dis
covery, to greut achievements, to
the consolidation of em p: res and
the subjugation of barbarous
nations in Asia and Africa, to the
study ot the sciences aud the solu
tiou of social problems. It is not
stiange, theictore, that lime ehnuld
he a decline in the arts ot poetry,
music, painting, sculpture aud
architecture.

Our town needs a good harness
maker badly. It would be a good
place for some man to locate, as
there is a large country adjacent to
this place, and they have to go to

Mr. N. Shanks showed tne a
small stone he found a few days
ago, which lie thinks is a genuine
madstone. He has been ompar
ing it with Mr. J. V. Moses mad
stone and they look very much
alike. It is just recently that we
found out the value of t hew stones,
and as we now have two in town
it will not cost a man a fortune to
lie cured of any ailment.

oyster supner at midnight, and
breakfast in the morning. There

the feast. The visiting members
stated that they were never better
entertained outside of Portland.
The lodge bore all the cxeuse of
the supier and entertainment. The
lodge met again last Wednesday
evening and will continue to meet
everv v ednesdav for a while until
they get in good running order.
