The method of enlarging the held of knowledge by reading and other scientific circles, that has t-rovrn so popular and so common is distinctively of this country. The lndianopolis News says that the American is making for himself a reputation-as the greatest seeker after knowledge that ever lived. This search for truth is manifested in many ways, some of them u lique and all interesting. The huilding of schools reema, indeed, to be only an incidental evidence that we are making educational progress. The establishment of libraries, reading-rooms, and night schools is an interesting branch of this progress, though being fre quently founded on a charitable . in -j basis they are hardly evidence of ; the best phases of it. But the Chautauqua idea, the sumimr j schools, the clubs for the promo-J i ion of culture, even the desoised ' drowning club, are all testimony to the studious side of the Ameri- can character. The old-fashioned ! camp-meeting now offers induce ments in the way of popular lectures, and has taken on the role of educator. The Chautauqua plan oi combining a summer resort with a lecture system is spreading, and lias been adopted in a number Ot j states. It has been urged against the reading circles, which are now k popular, that they give superfi cial instruction. The courses of reading appear sufficiently thorough so far as they go, and they certain ly attract the attention of people who would otherwise miss the benefit (even superficial) which they derive from a regular course of reading. The Americans have turned their attention with equal J earnput l4 In the frrm in -' flnhi There are Shakespeare clubs and i sketching clubs and organizations I for everything that can add to the , stock of knowledge of the members. ! 4 f course a great many profitless i kinds of study are taken up in this : craze for knowledge. In the Buddhism has lately had a run but .-i . i i .i. a fiance uirouiiii tnc newspapers from all parts of the country proves I that there is no lack of diversity in 1 the subject studied. We have j Wllflw! Afktl i ri fr'liA olio of a nuiuviviivii a 4 l ( Vllttl AtlCl ol" this awakening to show llOW I wide-spread it is, and to indicate what an influence this search for knowledge must ultimately exert. AVe are iut a listless people in any sense, but wHe awake and ener getic in study as well as business. Such a general attention to self impnivement must make of us a cultured people. AtTEl! THE TRUSTS. The decision of Judge Barrett of the Supreme court of New York, on the case of the "sugar trust" that was taken up to that court, and in which the Judge decides that the North River Sugar Refin ing Company had forfeited its charter by joining the "sugar trust," is the sharpest criticism upon the trust business that has yet been made, and wili probably lead to some piac'.ical results in shaping legislation and controlling the nefaiicus business. General ' Pryor, one of the ablest lawyers in tie country, in speaking of this' decision says that the decision j of Judge Barrett was as he expect' ed it would be. It was a signal victory for the people and a .severe ; rehuke to the promoters of tru.stt, HwrsM u ..hiin- TIihiw wpiv i ' ' no facts at issue ; it was simply a question as to the law. He was confident tl at the decision would be affirmed in tJieC'ourt of Appeals, and hoped that the defense would arry the case there and have it letinitely settled. The decision, in Mr. I'ryor's opinion, was far reaching iu its effect. It was founded on common law, and, therefore, of value as a precedent in an Mate of the Union. It ap plied to all kinds of trusts and v unbinations.uml the envelope and milk trusts wouid prohablv be pro ceeded against in due time. Presi dent Carnot and his ministry opposed the election, and the result has led to the resignation of the ministry and may cause a change in the entire administration. Such a situation in thia country could not be reached, and France will have no stability to its republic until its laws and customs are so modified as tojnake it impossible there. The Chronicle thinks that old Millionaire Arbuckleof New York, during the remainder of his natu ral life will probably regard law and women witii equal suspicion. Recently lie was mulcted by the courts in $75,000 for breach of pro mise, after enduring the humilia tion of having his love-hick epistles signed "JJaby Bunting" read forj the delectation of the court.
