To try a second inning; If I would score no jny the more, But blunder match with blunder? No wiser happier than before - Would it be so, I wonder? A M0J)ERN RUTH. Dr. Alexander Amlorer threw him self into the big leather-covered chair be ore his office tirj with a weary sigh. He waa a tine looking man of thirty: not handsome, but noble and manly-looking one to be trusted for ever, with his broad white brow and graye, clear gray eyes. His lips, too. under the full brown beard were as fine as a woman's, without lacking in strength and nrmness, Dr. Andover's patieuts especially the poorer classes and the cbUdre up turned to him ' instinctively 'for' ad vice and sympathy. His was one of those grand, kingly natures, which seem made for leaders and comfort ers. Poor Betty Carry, a bedridden paralytic could not speak of him without shedding tears of gratitude. Little Jane Ellis, suffering with an incurable hip disease, looked upon him as a sort of god upon earth. There were a score more of them who thought of him not only as their physician, but as a kind and gener ous friend, who delighted to brighten the lives which would otherwise be poor and barren enough. But fate had lately fiowned upon him. Iu the first place, the bank in which the greater part of his snug little fortune was deposited had failed, and directly upon this came the news that some mining stock iu which he had invested was worthless, or uearly so. The doctor did not fear poverty himself his practice brought him a comfortable income, for the rich appreciated him as well as the poor out miles away in a dis tant city there was a lovely girl, whom he had hoped to call wife by Christmas time. A girl, who though not wealthy herself, had beea ex trayagautly educated by her uncle, i in whose luxurious home she lived. He knew that not the slightest priva tion had ever come to her; she was a petted darling, with hano's like a baby's. lie had never questioned if she knew anything about work the idea iu connection with Maud Everleth was absurd, He had been able to take her to a home as tine as the oue she was to leave, but that was gore now. Loveiy, daiuty, nseKss as she seemed, Dr. Audove: had poured the whole passion of his great heart upon h.r, and you are not to think hint weak because just at first, wheu the uewa vf lii ili lor;uue came to inui, he shrank and trembled un.ler it, thinking of the he . loved. For he must give her up; there was no doubt iu his m;ud about that. He could not ask hei t shire itit late uf a poor physician vwio depended upon his lees for a living. He even smiled grimly iu the mid.it of his suturing at the thought of Maud iu calico dies.-, I mixing up bread, wasiung nis.ies with her white, slender hug rs, which he had ouly secu toing witn her tau, workiug at embroidery, or dashing over the keys of a piano. So doctor Andover had written her a brave farewell letter just a mouth before the time set for their wedding, informing her of his altc-ieJ tortun.-s, and releasing her from her engage ment to him, and he bad received no answer, althougn it was now Chris tmas week. The doctor was worn out witii ex posure to rough weather and many aieepies nights. Thd demand upon ins tune and strength had beeu greater than usual; yet he had replied to ttiein all,' never failiug iu kindly courtesy beside the coucu of lietty Cary any more than iu the luxurious chamber of Aiuditiu GolJdust, who feed him so generously. ll was now ClirisUna3 week, and Maud was to have been Ilia own next Friday nilit. About mi.i uight he awoke, aiieiuteiy burn. 114 ana shivering, while a Uuli paiu thro'nbeu in his temples. The doctor's ap.nuuents were com modious and comiortatiie. A large chanibtr opened from i.is private office, which the lutier opened lroiu a lar6e receiving-room. He was his own patient now, so he hastened to bed; aud when his land lady came iu the morning to call him she fouud him unable to rise from his pillow, feverish aud halt delirious. Christmas morning came bright and frosty a day after St Nicholas" own beart ana tne doctor, a trime better, although weak and languid, opened his eyes to close them again immediately with a little pang. Ihis was to have been his wedding day! He conld hear the merry salutations on the street, the crash ot sleigh-bells and the jeatiug orgau from St. Paul's Church over the way; and the sun light aud mirth and gladness made his owii pain seem the keener just for a moment, until his generous heart could gather strength to reassert it sen, aud be gUd because others were hut. The landlady, who had been like a mother to him, came in presently, with a very smiling expression upon her broad face. Many f his grateful patients had remembered him with some little Christmas tokens, and Mrs. Derby had placed them upon the stand at his bedside; but now she held in her hands a small package addressed to him in a familiar lady's hand and reg istered in a distant city. Maud had returned the engage ment ring. Dr. Andover received the package in silence, and Mrs. Derby looked at him with a crest fallen expression. "I thought you would be pleased doctor. I've come to know Miss Everleth's handwriting you see, and I supposed she had sent you a Christmas present. The package came two days ago, when you were delirious, and I signed the regintery card, aud made bold to send the lady a telegram notifying her of your ill nets. And, so Dr. Andover, caa you bear some pleasant news? ' I received a telegram in return slating that Miss Everleth would start at once to come to you. Now that is a sort of a girl to make you a good wife. She will probably be here to-day." To-day! Dr. Andover listened to kind Mrs. Dei by in bewilder ment. What did it ail mean! With trembling fingers he tore off the wrapper of the tiny pack age and opened a jeweler's case. There upon its bed ot purple lay a wide gold linger-ring, extraordin ary wide, the lu&ide of which was completely covered w th tine let tering. Aod so Dr. Andover read slowly through blind, rapturou tears, the waids which tue jeweler a instrument had traced there the grand old Scriptural words wbicii bad arisen in the heart nt the eirl, who thus proved iierneif worthy ! hiiu, when his letter had come to her after inauy wetiy days ot'de lay: "Entreat uic not to leave thee,or to return irom following alter thee, tor whither thou goe:t 1 will go.and where thou lodgest 1 will lodge; thy people shall be my people, and tli j God iny Gou ; wueie thou diest will die, aud there 1 will be buried ; tue Lord do so to me and more also; if aught but death part uie and thee.' Mrs. Derby slipped oat of the room crying herself, at the bight el' Dr. Aodover, uull bo calm aud stroug auu aelt-possesscd, crying like a two year old . baby over Maud s Christmas tokeu. It was nearly noon when Maad herself came. She removed her wraps iu Mrs. Derby's room, uid after a light lap at the tick mau's door she entered. Alexander Aodovc-r hud thought her lovely iu her exquisite party and camiige aud houie toilets; but never before had she seemed so sweet aud gracious and womanly a-' now, when iu her plain, gray (ravelin? cu-tiinie. her lovelv lace mus ...... v. citeiueni, her tuouin tieuukus,ud her dark eyes g.owiLg witii a n emo li'ht, she .idcd iu her switt, uoiseloss way across the room .o his side.
