A lot of citizens of Minnesota have petitioned congress to buy Cuba. If they want a mild climate they should come to Oregon id pis Many new buildings and plans for more are being made in this ity. The present year promises to mark a substantial and rapid growth in Albany. mill i-ity, a new town on ine Oregon Pacific railroad about '.io miles east of Albany, already has oyer 300 inhabitants. This is ; another proof of the rapid growth of this portion of the state. The corporate limits should by all means be extended to keep pace with the growth of the city. In a growing city like Albany public enterprises and improve ments should be on broad gauge principles. Some of the learned ? talesmen of this country express the belief that the United States needs a foreign war to heal our own sec tional dessentions. The only trouble, however, is to rind a nation on the war path which could really f.ttigue us. TEMFEBANCE H0TE8. Contributed by the W. C. T. U. A saloon can no more be run without using up boys than a flour ing mill without wheat, or i saw mill without logs. The only ques tion is, whose boys? Your boys or neighbors? There were manufactured in New York city alone 642,038,749 cigars and 491,979,620 cigarettes. Just think upon these figures until the vastnes of the number is fixed in yoar mind, and then consider what the total manufactory must be in the United States. The tobacco policy of the Kansas State Teacher's Association, which closed its annual session Dec. 29. is as follows: Resolved, That we condemn the use of tobacco in any form by the instructors of our youth, and that the use of tobacco by pupils in or about our school buildings shall he prohibited. It is probable that we may have Maj. Geo. A. Hilton in Albany the latter part of this week. As he has lectured in both Salem and Tort land with great acceptance, also in Tacoma and Seattle, the people of Albany will no doubt be glad to have the opportunity of hearing him. The Farmers National Alliance representing many states and ter ritories, in annual session in Pes Moines, Iowa, on the 10th ult. adopted the following: "Resolved, That we re commend the passage of such laws by the National gov ernment as will prohibit the mam -facture and sale of all intoxicating beverages within the borders of the United States under a severe penalty." There is every reason to believe that in case of a war with Germany over the Samoa trouble Gei man Americans would all be in hearty sympathy with the country under whose flat; they live, and would help fight for her freedom and rights of the United States. It is announced that a German spy is coming to this country to investigate and report to his gov ernment everything of interest concerning our army and navy, facilities for war. He will not find a very extensive army or navy, but he will find plenty of fighting Americans who will not be imposed upon or insulted by Germans or any of the foreign nation. If Ger many does not believe it, let her continue her present course until after the 4th of March, and she may be given a chance to realize its truth. An ite n has been inserted in the )y that more persona die from diseases of the throat and lungs than aiiy other. it is probable ttiat everyone, without exception, receives vast r umbers of Tubeicle Germs into the system an J where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by a slight tickling eensation in the throat and if allowed to continue their ravages they extend to the hinrs pro ducing consumption and to the head, causing catarrh. Now oil this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in time cause death, At the onset you must act with promptness; allow, ing a cold to go without attention is dangerous and may lose you your life. As soon as you feel that some thing is wrong with yonr throat, lungs or nostrils, obtain a bottle of Boschee's German Syrup. It will give jou iin mediate re'lief. north Knowing. Mr. W. H. Morgan, merchant, Lake City Fla., was taken with a severe Cold: attended with a distressing Cough and running into Consumption in its first stages. He tried many so called popular cough remedies and steadily grew worse. Was reduced in flesh, and had difficulty in breathing and was unable to sleep. Fiualy tried Dr. King's New Discovery lor Consumption and found immediate rcl.ef and after nsing a half dozen bottles found LimsHf well and has had no return of the disease. In Oregon, Washington territory and Alaska, combined there are 1,852 dealers in distilled liquors, and 173 dealers in malt liquors, making a total of 2,034 dealers in intoxicating drinks. These figures are for the year 1888, and are taken from the report ot the commissioner of internal revenue. It is shown from this report that Kansas, a prohibition state, makes not only the largest proportionate decrease in the number of "dealers" during the year, but has, also, followed by Iowa, by far the fewest in pro portion to population, both states making at the same time a tre mendous proKrtionate decrease in the production of liquors; while their high license livals, Pennsyl vania, Ohio and ..lissouri, show great gains iu tl total production j of liquors. A comparison propnating fiuu.uuo for the pay ment of damages to the families of certain Japtnese who were acci dentally killed during the target practice f the United States man- f war Omaha, in 1887. The prin-1 cinle is correct enough, but Japanese must be expensive, as there were only one or two killed, if we remember correctly, and a I native hut or two knocked down, and $100,000 would pay for a whole 'village, so far as the houses are concerned. Human life is not so readily appraised, but it looks as though the senate were disposed to be too generous. The Cosmopolitan for January presents the succinct views of sev eral of our prominet public men on tne question oi oiit: i union with Canada. Their opinions are as diverse as the opinions of their people. Judge Kelley, of Pennsyl vania, and Congressman Butter worth, of Ohio, express themselves as emphatically in favor of union, and a paragraph from Senator Sherman's recent speech is quoted, in which he declares himself Htrongly to the same effect. Sena tor Ingalls, Speaker Carlisle, Con gressman McCreary, chairman ol the house committee on foreign i flairs; Senator Morgan, of Ala bama, and Congressmen Breckin ridge, of Arkansas, also look on annexation favorably, but they are much more reserved and caution therefore, of "liquor-dealers" in prohibition and license states is obviously unfair to the former.
