MLFKD'( CWCKTSHir. Am Awkard PslttoB la Stage. It Early Indianapolis Corr. New York World. Tbe sudden prominence of Elijah Halford, the President-elect's pri vate secretary, recalls a story of bis youthful days. It occurred when he first started into society; Even private secretaries of Presidents sometimes have disagreeable ad ventures of this early, but interest ing period of their lives. It is of no little moment to get a fellow' coarage up to toe point ot call ing upon a girl tor the first time. It takes a brave heart when every thing goes smoothly, and when there are brealccis ahad in the way of opposition by the parents it takes the rit "f a seldicr to be tuc- cessful. it there is anything in clined to ruffle the tender sensibil ities of a voung man it in to have a thoughtless parent insinuate that he is too young to call uoon hi? daughter and that she is ti o youn to receive his altentioos. It was tbU9 that they sought to crush the youthful Hallord. He wasn't crushed, however. At every attempt he bobbled up big ger than before. About this time the family went to the neighboring town of Bloom iogton to spend a week. The young lady remained at home. During their absence Major J. B Mulky, au old friend of the family Was called to Indianapolis on bi ness, and the parents of the giri told him to be sure to go around aud ppeud the evening with tucii daughter. "She would be lonely,1' tliey said. They were mistaken, however. She was uot lonely. Neinier was Halford. A joliiei couple could not have been touud when the bell rang at 8:30 o'clock that evening, but the cold chilli chased upun-i down hist pine when she said: "Oli.wliat it that shonlu be pa aud uia!' Tuey wouloj'i otop in the parlor long it it was so, so after a few moments' consults tion Halford was securely bidden behind a highbacked divan which stood across tbe corner of the room. The door was opened, but it wasn't pa and ma. It was Mu ky wbo ambled in and en sconaea mmsett trie cozy divan ana miormed the young lady that he hud come to fulfill bis promise to her parents to help ber pass away tbe iong evening. The thernometer was in tbe nineties, and tbe Major oi ten referred to the tact as he mopped bis manly brow. It was hot :or Mulky. what was tbe state of the temperate for Halford? tie was hotter than be was at tbe Qresbam men in tbe Chicago con vention. Mr.Halford was a devout Methodist, but was sot accustomed to remain upon his knees tor hour continously. Hence it was tortun ate that Mulky occupied the divan, lor tbe prisoner could occasionally rise and get a breath of air and the benefit of a fan with whicb the I thoughtful young lady had provia '.. - 1 i ed her caller. After one glimpse of HalfordV face ebe opened all tbe doors and windows and gave Mulky a larger tan than ever. He waved it un ceasingly and was probably thus instrumental iu preserving Ha! ford'a life, for whicb service be will doubtless expect an appointment. To resume the major carried ou the principal part ot the conversa tion unaided. He talked over the political situation and ot bis own iuspirations iu that directiou. He theu took up the subject ol chess at which game be is an expert anu torn ner oi ins various victor ies, entering into th A. tai s und intricocies ot this spr ghtlj and fas cii.ating game. Meanwhile, in order to keen his blood circulating tad obtain air. Halford moved carefully and noise lessly aoout like a cased lion and arose tod fell like a Roman Em pin in his efforts. At 9 :30 the visitor arose and said he regretted h-s eould not re main longer, the yuan? ladv joined him in regret, but the one who regretted most of all was Hai- ile regretted that he could not gii, iroiu behind from the then and there ai.d wipe un th earth i:n him. The Majur bowed iiiiuoeu out and lUilord wus ie . leased and revived. Afterward when he informed some intimate friends of the incident and obser ved that thos were the longest two hours he had ever passed up on this terrestial globe, they be lieved him. ELECT KIl'ITV IS MEBICINK, BY DR. D. It. JONES. It was not until within the last few years that electricity has re ceived anything like the attention it merited front the medical profes sion. To be sure Bcieutibts exper imented, and a few of the more inquiring among the medical men gave shocks of static electricitv, which were at times shockingly barbarous, and too often shockingly injurirus. Fortunately for the good name of the profession, as well as for suffering humanity, this cruel treatment has been abolished and instead Of painful shocks of electricity s pleasant and invig orating flow of the 6ame is made to permeate a part or the whole of the fryritera as the case requires. The profession had long felt the need of some remedy better suited to certain forms of disease than was to be found in the materia inedica, and it was at length dis covered in electricity in one or the other of its forms. By its intelli gent use the blind have been made to see, the deaf to hear and the nick restored to health. It is not rny purpose to belittle the adminis tration of medicines when they ought to be given, but to set forth electricity us a remedy too fre quently neglected, a remedy that when all others fail comes to our aid and effects a cure. In skillful hands it can be ap plied to the most sensitive organi zation and to children of tender age. ft imparts tone and vigor to enfeebled organs and strengthens the most nervous and debilitated constitutions. Of all our investi gations into the mysteries of nature none have been more beneficial, none more wonderful and astound ing in their results than those which haw arisen from the study of electricitv. And yet electricity as a great healing agent is in its infancy. BKIEF MKXTIOX. Maui yeast atBrownell & Stanard's A new invoice of British trimmings at Read's.
