Farmers in the Sound country and islands are setting a good example in j having their land underd rained, as is shown by the following from J. C. ! Ayer to a Seattle ,n r: j ihe lanners ot Whidby island, about, Coupeville, are becuming much interested in t.ie dr.nnace. Messrs. Gould L' Jauii-j have last couipleteu the largest and most complete system yet laid in the territory, oO.OOO feet, with a single ten-incii uiaiu long. The soil consists ot various contin uations of clay, aaud aud loam, charged with a reat deal of mineral. This drain system covers about "0U acres and costs over $300C. The farm is at Ebey's lauding, iu plain view from Tore TownseuJ. Mr. Thoina. Calhoun has also laid 10,000 feet ou the High warden place in what is called joint clay soil. Mr. John Robertson is aUo about' to put 20,000 teet ou his rauch, seven miles down the island. All these lands hold water so much that theT canuot be worked early in the 8priug and much loss is caused iroiu iiaviug crops mature too late in t! e season, aud the quality is be lieved to be often much lower than it :hould be. Horticultural Society's Journal con tains a discussion on this subject, of wnicn tne following are extracts. Iu answer to the question. "How does underdraining effcit the apple?" Dr. Twwusend avid: "Uu a erd raining maaes tne orcnara grow twice as well. - An orchard underdrained is always more healthy,- and stands the changes in the seasons better than one not' underdrained. It is noli af fected by the drouth so badly, nor by a "wet 'season. Underdrawing, too neips to make the soils more porous. so the water that falls on it craduallv sinks in, and the excess is carried off by the tile; being more porous, it re tains more water in the soil, not on top ef it; roots run farther through tae soil and reach more moisture held i i the porons ' soil than they would if the soil was harder. I under- diained ray farm forty years ago, so have bad some chance to see how old drain operate. ' I hare a drain every two rods on 240 acres, and the drain has been an advantage in both wet and dry seasons." A member said be had a black elm swale of five acres which he bad ''underdrained. using an eignt-ineh main and a number of small laterals. The soil is now ready and easy to work soon after a heavy ran. But the qnestion is, will n the water do more good left in the low place and permitted to soak into the soil or the held surrounding the swale? Dr. Townsend, replying, said the water in such a place would either go down or up; and the held arunl wouiil receive .it tie or no benefit fio:n the swamp.
