Some time since a gentleman in ! The Oregoman say : Major Jones Arizona wrote to The Oreiionian i r 'turned from Texas Ratals yes asking for information in regard to j t;-?day and wont on through to the malices for securing here a Corvallis to settle with thecontrae number of Mongolian pheasants, t :-r oi the revetment work at that which the Rod and Gun Club of Arizona desire to nroniiv for the ' nnroose of sroekiny that territory. 1 The Oregonian invited all who have been complaining of having their farms and gardens laid waste by these pheasants to state what they would supply some of the birds to the Rod and Gun Club for, and how many thev could furnish. No answer was received, and it is therefore judged that none of these i persons who complain so much ot j the pheasants know how to catch I the birds which annoy them, or else do uot care to get rid of them. One person who has raised three pairs, writes that thev can be had for $20 per pair. This seems rather a steep price lor these buds The I Rod and Gun Club would probably pay $20 for the three pairs, which is much more than they are worth for anv nuroose. These pheasants ar tmIIv vorv mimprniis in somo i parts of the valley, and are spread- j inz all over it. They have crossed the Willamette, and are found from Corvallis to Forest Grove on the West Side, and some of them have lately been seen out in Pu .veil's valley, a few mi le? in :n this city. A gentleman who has been nr through the valley lately avs he ! saw a flock of thirty pheasants in a t stubble held, and a mend who lives on a farm, said he had often seen larger flocks. j Some wide-awake farmer's boy j ought to be able to trap a dozen or tw of these birds for th" Arizona Rod and Gnn Club, who will doubtless pay well for them, but are not likely to pay $20 a pair Oregon ian. It ex poses to the assessor antty iauses- to be taxed promissory notes that would otherwise be hiduen by the holders and escape taxation. As an example of the ni l benefit above enumerated : If the mortgage tax law did not exist the notes held by men in Portland, secured by mortgages on land in Linn county, would, if i discovered by the assessor be taxed in Portland, and being taken' as indebtedness from the assessment of the owner of the land, the land would be transferred for taxation from Linn to Multno mah county, and the county, road and school' districts of Linn would lose this tax and its amount be shifted to the other property of the county and increase the levy on it. i The repeal o' the mortgage tax law i would be m the interest ot money J lUailUIO Will 111. l"t uuliktl ri,0 iM0,,i(J As the law now stands monev is. atundant in the hands of brokers ! am luin. v,e had bv all who wish! t0 borrow and "can give good i moderate means an si'iis ble and RPP tlim; tpn4 illtprnfir thl, u,,;Jd nuueo 5lu continue to support the mortgage I .tav law anrl nmenro th(" n.issnfP , ... , w..,- ipr laws which will mtiko the: inniuivM I- ns liiiv r iiiir ill-it. snarrt 0f ti,, tuxe,s whi.:F. thevstiil escape ;n a 2reat Jc'ree bv skillful dodii- UK JlSTICE.
