Orops have been bad and are hemmed in by snow. Many of the families are suffering lor the actual necessities of life. Farmers are killing their stock. Cardinal Tassiclurean and the premier have been appealed to. They held a consultation with the cabinet last evening and it was de cided to ask the government to send immediate aid to the sufferers. They stormed the rebel trenches, and after a brilliant engagement lasting half an hour drove them from their position. The rebels reported the loss of a thousand killed. The British loss is light. SALEM'S STREET CARS ARRIVED. The cars for the Salem street railway arrived here to-day and were housed in the company's stables. The iron for the track has not arrived yet but is expected daily. The road will be in opera tion by Jan. 1st. PIONEER WOMAN'S DEATH. Mrs. Harrison Brunk, wife of a well-known pioneer, died at her home near Eola, l'olk county, last night, aged about 70 years. She was a member of the Waller family and came to Oregon in the forties. THE STATE WILL RECEIVE $75,000. A direct tax bill which is now in the hands of the president will bring $35,12-").42 into the state treasury, providing it is not vetoed.
