The Post to-morrow will say: The president takes the result calmly and philo sophically. He taikeii ijuite freely about the returns and the increased republican vote, but expressed not the slightest regret in the world at any action he had taken during ids administration. He is willing to admit that his position on the tar i:l", and the decided stand he took in favor of revenue reduction, may have lost him a good many votes, but slill maintains if it were to do over again he would follow the dictates of his own convictions. The president received no tele grams from the national democratic committee until late this att-j-'noon, From what he has heard, however, he concedes that he is defeated. He attributes his defeat to no one in particular, and says that Hill ami Tammany hall treated him with perfect fairness, and he has no fault to find at all. Tiie Causes That otiitiiiteI to Irefeat ClevciaiKi. New Yokk, Nov. 7. In this state, where the battle was foutrht , and won. part" lines 0:1 the pivs:-. dential issue were closely drawn, but the protection war cry made many democratic recruits, and in almost every other Northern tate too, where large manufacturing and agricultural interests prevail, the tide seemed to have set 111 favor of the republican candidates. In the Kast, r.otably was the example oi Pennsylvania and Masa -husetts which gave largoly increased nia- or:ties, while in Connecticut the ic plurality oi four years ago was either "tTliliterated or re duced to so low a figure as to leave small margin. The ablest demo crats, frjm Hill down, could not relieve the minds of thinking mass es of this apprehension. To a fear of industrial impairment is the re sult of the New York election large ly due. Another factor which contributed materially to the republican victory was the division in the New York democracy between the friends of Pre.- i lent Cleveland ar.d Governor Hill. For over a year has this coolness existed between them. The governor, however, had such elements of strength that it was d enied impolitic to trample on him outright, and he was reluot arrJv accorded a renomination. The closest friends of Cleveland openly announced their intention 01 knihng him at. the polls, and car ried their threats into execution. Hill's friends said nothing, but evidently lost no trick, as he run ahead of Cleveland in almost every portion of the state, notably in the county of Erie, Cleveland's home, where Harrison had a majority of nearly 2000 and Hill 5000. In Kings county, the .home of Boss McLaughlin, a friend of Hill, the governor ran some 8000 votes ahead of the president. In this city the friends of the president and the govemoi were also arrayed against each other, Cleveland being sacri ficed to save Hill. The three coi nered fight for supremacy also aided the election of Harrison. Ol.'hkU.N CAITLK. Tr.-iii.-ior(cl to Alaska - A i'oor Coun try tor Live Slock. Sheridar, who was one of the guests, entei tained his next neighbor, who happened to be the proprietor and editor of a well known western newspaper, with some observations on the Franco-Prussian war and on the prospect that the nations would soon have to abandon war as a method of deciding questions of state. Sheridan was full of admiration tor the braveiy and gallantry oe the t rench, whom he pronounced as fine soldiers as one could wish to see. He said they weie not properly officered in their war with the Prussians, and he plainly inti mated that it was to this fact that ihe Germans owed their success. The general said he was strongly of the opinion that the time was rapiliy approaching when tie richest nations will not be able to go to war. This will be due to th uiscovtry 01 new explosives, so teiribly destructive in character that they will kill whole regiments at a single discharge. No disci pline and no moral resolves will i e able to stand against them, ana tiieir discovery makes it certain that diplomacy and arbitration must take the place of armies and of navies. i liiin v ai It'. i.ut'im or SrIaesi:e:i'i The au'.boiship of tin drainutic productions contributed to the hist cf tin- aiiove named is niriti.tintr literal circles to the very centse' lint affect--the pivctk-al masses far iess Until ti;u momentous question, how to regain or preserve health, that? essential of bodily and mental activit , business success auu ltie''pursuit of happiness" We can tii row far moie iiht on this subject than the most profound hakesperian 'can on the question propounded.
