Morton. The democrats concede
the election o Harrison, and the
returns received in this city show
that there is a sweepir g republican
victory in the United Mates.
The returns from the state are
slowly coining in. 107 precincts,
including Portland, give Harrison.

Henton county shows a republi

ty exceeds its usual republican
majority. From the returns it is
estimated that the majority for
Harrison will somewhat exceed
the republican majority in June.
NEW YORK GIVES HARRISON 11,101.
New York, Nov. 7. The vote of
all the counties in the state, in
cluding New York and King coun
ties, shows a plurality for Cleve
land of 78,050, and for Harrison of
00,470, making Harrison's plural
ity in the state 11,191.
CONNECTICUT.
New Haven, Nov. 7. The re
turns are complete and give Cleve
land a plurality of 450 in the state.
The republicans elect the state
ticket. The legislature will be!
strongly republican.
IOWA.
Pes Moines, Nov. 7. The re
publican majorities average 30,
000 and elect every comjiessman
except in the Second district.
MICHIGAN.
Detroit, Nov. 7. The republi
cans will elect 10 of the 1 1 con
gressmen. The latest returns give
the state to Harrison by 15,000 to
1S.O0O majority. The legislature
will be heavily republican.
MINNESOTA.
St. Paul, Nov. 7. There is
nothing new to repoit from Minne
sota. The state is safely republi
can. ILLINOIS.
Chicago, Nov. 7. The vote of
84 counties in Illinois, including
Cook countv, shows a majority for
Harrison o'f 38,943; Cleveland,
19,373. The remaining 18 counties
in 1884 gave Blaine 5884 and Cleve
land 6542. Assuming that the 18
counties not yet heard from give
the same resuits as in 1884, the
&iate will give a plurality for Har
rison of 18,912. It is safe to say,
therefore, that Harrison's plurality
will be about 19,000.

SanFrancisco,Nov.7 In Nevada
there are 172 precincts. Of these
the complete returns from (31 pre
cincts give Harrison, 4005; Cleve
land, 2887.

Destrurttve Earthquakes in the
Malayan Aicuipelago.
Late last Spring the two cables
lines that connect Austialia with
Northern Hemispheres suddenly
and simultaneously ceased to work,
and the island coutiuent whs for a
time cut off from inetananious
communication with the outer
world. Tlie fact that both cables
on the same day failed to render
their usual service wms regarded as
a remarkable coiudeuce, a.: J ex
cited alarm. Letters from Mel
bourne say the opinion was general
that this strange coincidence was
either the result of a great convul
sion at the bottom ot the ocean or
was the work of an enemy; and
every Australian Government lost
no tirns in putting its defeuses in
the best possible condition. It was
not loDg, however,- before placidity
of mind was restored by the dis
covery that nature, and not man,
was responsible. In the great vol
canic belt south --of Java, where the
cables lie within forty miles of
each other, they had been simultan
eously fractured, it is supposed by
some tremendous submarine dis
turbance. A few weeks ago one of the hun
died of little isiunds that dot that
part of the world was racked bv-
the eruptive throes ot the volcaDo
which forms its conspicuous fea
ture. The cable has tr night us
meagre details of tlie burial of vil
lages under layeis of laya aud ashes
aud the wretched deaths of many
natives. Piol:. Wallace, in "The
Malay Archipelago," has given a
most gi..piiic picture of the des
tructive euergy often displayed by

destroyed by a siuiile eruption in
Java, of 12,000 people killed in the
great eruption of sumbawa, and of
the ashes darkening the air and
failing thickly on the sea for 300
miles arouuu. When lie visited
Makian. in the Moluccas, in lbb'0,
he louud twelve Malay villages
there aud its big mouutaiu was
c ad with verdure to its summit.
When, two years later, he saw the
iiiand auiu, most of the mountain
had been blown into the sea and
the greater part of the populace had
been killed. Earthquakes aud vol
canic outbursts aie chronic there,
and often we do not hear for many
months of great calamities that
have overwhelmed some small
islands in those waters.
Since the awiul explosion tbat
blew the island of Krkito into
the sea, and destroyed many thous
ands of lives, no volcanic eruption
has equaled m magnitude and dire
ful results tlie disaster that over
whelmed a number of Japanese
villages about 200 miles of Tokio
early in July. There was no tire
or lava, aud the tragedy seems to
have been caused by immense vol
umes of steam which, without a
moment's warning, blew one of the
three peaks of the Bandia-san vol
canic mto the air and scattered the
debris for many miles around,
burying five hamiets under twenty
teetof liquid mud. It was lika
boiler explosion of indescribable
violence. Bou der9 weighing
many tons were shot five miles in
the air. A little river was buried
out of sight. The country for five
miles on one side of the volcano
was overwhelmed by the trrent of
falling earth. An abyss about
1000 feet deep now marks the spot
where the peak rose high above the
surrounding country. All land
marks were obliterated, and above
the rice fields here and there the
impeded streams nave formed
great lakes. Nearly a thousand
people were killed in this deluge,
which lor a time turned day into
night, and mot of their bodies
were buried where they stood,
under the new table-land formed
by the rain of redhot earth.
No wonder the Japanese have a
mortal terror of earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions, when they are
treated to such prodigious displays
ot the subterranean forces.

down and shot maliciously with
out any provocation whatever.

Birmingham, Nov. 7. It is an
nounced that Mr. Chamberlain is
en route to America, and that he
will marry Miss Endicott on his ar
rival. He will spend a few weeks
in visiting friends in America, and
will return to England about
Christmas.
The Productiveness of Oregon.
The soil here is wonderfully rich
and productiv2 ani produces wheat
oats, bailey, flax, peas, beans, ve
getables of ail sorts and staple
fruits in their most perfect form.
Oregon flour has long commanded
the highest price in the Liverpool
market, and row Oregon apples,
green and evaporated, pears and
prunes sell for more than the pro
duct or any other part of tfce
United States in Chicago. St.
Paul buys our "big red apples''
and luscious prunes. The yield of
both tLese frui s long since ac -corded
the best of "staples"' in all
market?, has been enormous this
year, aud the sight of an average
Oregon orchard would make the
ever, of a "Michigan apple grower, '
or Eastern pru ne producer turn
green with envy. Prunes set out
in good land and well cultivated
will begin bearing in at least five
years, that is, so one can call the
bearing a crop. To plant them
will cost, say an acre of ground,
50; 155 trees (the average number
