secretary, so the story goes. They
settled "here, where for the past
few years he devoted himself to
literary work.

with a revolver and threatened to

woman who ran away with him,

Green, Captain Patrick, from St
Marc, Hayti, reported that on Oc
tober 18th, when off St. Marc
he was ordered to heave to by a
Haytian man.-of-war, whose armed
ofiicers and men came on board
three times taking tiie shipping
register and all of her papers, also
threatening to take her to Purl au
Piinceasa prize. After delaying
tlit in some time, ihe papers were
returned and the vessel allowed to
proceed.

New York, Nov. 3. The United
States express messenger on the New
Orl.-aus & Noitheastern railway,
which arrived here this morning, was
robbed- at 5 a. m. between Lacey and
Derby stations, fifty mile from this
city. The express officials decline to
state the amount of the robbery, but
it is understood the loss is between
$40,000 aud &"0,000. Tiie robber en
tered the express car, where Henry
McElroy, the baggage master, was
sittirig near the middle of the car,
and the express messenger, Charles
Lawrey, at one end checking off
freight. The robber came first to
the baggagemastpr and presenting a
pistol, required McElroy to hold up
his hands, then quickly throwing a
sack over MeElroy's head, the robber
gave his attention to the messenger,
wh was required at the point of the
pistol to open the safe. A sack was
then placed over the inessengfr's
head, while the robber proceeded
with the work ot securing the money.
After securing eke contents of the
safe the robber pulled the bell rope,
and when the train stopped
he left the car unobserved.
When the express car .was finally
reaciied by the conductor both
McElroy- and Lawrey were found
standing with hands up and sacks
over their heads. They wcr" under
the impression that the robber was
stiil present.

Buochs, three miles away. Only one
man is required to manage the train,
and the movement of the ear is com
pletely under his control. Onedj

work of hauling up and letting down
the cars containing fifty or sixty per
sons. At -the end of the journey
completed in about fifteen minutes

car moves gently against a spring
buffer, and is locked by a lever,
withoet noise and without joiting

undertaking has been carried out at
