One of the principal arguments advanced by President Cleveland and the Democratic leaders in de fense of their free trade scheme is the assumed necessity for extend ing our foreign trade. They want cheaper raw materials and cheaper labor so as to be able to make goods in competition with the cheap labor of Europe, Asia and Africa, and sell as cheap or cheap er than anybody in "markets of the world." Before seeking an extension of trade in foreign countries, why not extend it at home? There is a bigger and bstter market right here in the United States that we do not supply than we could pos sibly find abroad a maiket that 'would permit of good wages being 'paid under a proper protective system. Last year we imported merchandise to the value of $083, 000,000. More than half of this, we have the soil, e'imate, labor, and capital to produce, and the market to consume. We import ed SM.OOO.OOOJworth.o. .woolen goods, 31,0)0,00, worth of silk :joods, 50,000,000, worth of iron and steel, 29,000,001),worth of cotton goods, 33,000,000, worth of flax.hemp, and linens, 10,000,900, worth of wines and liquoit, 8,C0O,OU0, worth of manufactures of wow', 7,000.000 worth of giass nd glassware: 5,5J0,00J worth of earthenware. 6,000,000 worth of fa'icy articles. 3,70d,o00 worth of buttons. 5,000,00) worth of hatsand bonnets. 4,000,000 worth of leather, 4,0 Xj.OlM worth of gloves. 3,000,000,worth of metal composition. 2,OO0,t03 worth of soda. fj,'00,0'JO worth of tin bars. 5,000,000 w rth of raw cotton. 3,000,000 worth of hops. 19,000,00) worth of fairu products. 17,000,000 worth of wool. 20,000,0'iOworih of other American! -roducts $3U,l'H),00' worth in all. Here in the United States is a market for $:)1G,000,000 worth of products that we consumed bui did not produce, every dollar's worth of which we can produce and would produce under a proper ly protective system. The list doer, not include $17,000,000 worth ol hides, $55,000,000 worth of sugar, $19,000,000 worth of raw silk, ana many millions' worth of other pro ducts whose profitable production in sufficient quantity to supply the home market is surrounded with less or greater doubt. Here is a chance to extend our Irade at homethat promises better W H .A T You haven't;? Well let us tell you that by buying a cheap throwing away your money. Now to Conic SPECIALTY Belya Loc kwood is rather hard on the democratic speaking of Mr. Tlmrman. She says: "Thurmau 's too old a man to be vice -president. If he is elected he will die lef ore the inauguration. It was a shame for the democrats to nomi note him. What Hurts the demo cratic party is bringing out Tlmr man, the bandana handkerchief and snuff. The use of snufl is disgusting." It is no certain thing that Con gressman Mills, of Texas, will be a member of the next congress. He is a candidate for re-election, but dissatisfaction in his party has brought out an independent candi date, which ma result in the elec tion of the republican candidate. Poor Mills, the sheep of the coun try seem likely to worry him into obscurity, even if he did not care much for them. than anything abroad, and does not involve the" destruction of in dustry or the reduction of wages. Here is a market for more goods than England sells to the whole of Europe outside of her own terri tory a better and a larger market than even cheap raw materials and cheap labor could give us in any or all foreign countries. Cleveland Leader. It is estimated that at least 2000 illegal registrations, have been made in San Francisco. I torn this it would seem that even a strict registration cannot preserve the purity of the ballot box. F obably the locality that fervently and unanimously prajs for frost more than any other, just now, is Florida, for nothing else will end the yellow fever scourge. Frost kills the germs of the disease.
