from down the river, having left
Portland on October 6th. Cap',
.Smith has engaged a force of men
on Matheny's bar below Wheat
land and Lone Tree bar, increasing
ttie depth of water by sluicing ten
inches on each.
The "Corvallis" will remain here
until next Monday, when she will
start up the river again, and will
work her way up to Harrisburg,
where she expects to arrive about
January 1st.

liminary arrangements for one oi
the grandest military, naval and
civil displays ever witnessed in
this country. It will be the bu
of the centennial celebrations, auu
will be held in and about the har
bor of New York city on April 30th.
The President and Cabinet and
Congressional delegates, the Gov
ernors of all the States and Terri
tories, delegates from the State
Legislatures, United States Su
preme Courts of the States, army
and navy, and the commanders
and citizens of distinction are to
be invited to take part in the exer
cises and to attend a banquet and
ball in the evening.

Our amiable and gentlemanly
sheriff entered our office the other
day, in his usual urbane manner
and announced that he must serve
I apers on us. It was a notice ot
a Ureach of promise suit against us
by the Widow Clixby, who alleges
that we have been toying with her
hear'strings, and that it will take
$5000 of our cash to settle her
though - back to the old channel.
It is another move on the part of
our enemies to down us. We first
met the Widow Clixby twenty
eight days ago in Carter's grocery.
She asked our opinion oJ herrings
and we asked hers of soap.
She asked us to call at the house
and se some poetry sue had
written on the risa and fall of the
mastodon. We complied. We
cilled three or lour times alter
ward, but only as a friend.
On the occasion the widow
showed us a clipping from an
eastern paper to the effect that it
was better for a man who had pas
sed the age of twenty-three to
marry a widow, if he was to
marry, but we didn't bite.
We know our gait. If Ihe
Widow Clixby can prove to the
world that we haye toyed with her
affections we'll cheerfully go to

and requested that they take hold
of the work of buying the horses
and they did so. Among them
they have brought from Mahaska
county, a full car load of choice
Draft stallions, and the horses were
shipped from this city for.Oregon
the 26th inst. The Dr. bears the
reputation of being a pushing
thrifty and most excellent business
man and we are contideut he uid
well in stopping here to buy his
horses. He could not have done
better than to call to his aid
Messrs. Springer & Willard, who
are expert horsemen and thoroughly
posted in the horse business and
the horses of this part of the
county, and we believe in dealing
always iu the best. We trust the
doctor will find it to his interest to
come this way again at some future,
date and make other similar in
vestments. It is reported he has
made careful selections and bought
