FOR PKESIDENT, BENJAMIN HARRISON, OF INDIANA. FOR VICE-PRESIDENT, LEVI P . MORTON OF NEW YORK. FOR PRKSIUKSTIAL ELECTORS, ROBERT M'LEAN, WM. KAPUS C. W. FULTON. SEC ESS A R Y TO LEARN. One of the most necessary things to acquire, m a business education, is the suavity of manner and pleasing address that can only be found with true politeness. It can not be acquired in schools although its inculcation there is a matter of fact, but it is manly the result rf personal practice and pursuit, and it is often too much neglected. A recent writer says that a keen observance of our young men can not but be struck with a tendency on the part of a great many of them, at least, to disregard the small courtesies of hie tue in tangible yet very preceptible little things that make the man a gentle man. Many persons contend that outward manner is a very second ary consideration if the head is ' well stocked with knowledge, and that if a young man has the facility to get on in the world it is a matter of very little importance if hismai -ners do not model themselves after a Chesterfield. That this idea is prevalent is proved by the great number of well-educated met'. men of abilitv and power who, however, one would never accuse of being gentleman who, clever and with no lack of brains,, are painfully deficient in good breed ing. With no intentional lapses, they are awkward, bumptious, presuming, even vulgar. In rnott countries an educated man and n gentleman are almost synonymous terms. On this side of the Atlantic they by no means always belong to the same man. Educational ad vantages are within tne reach of all classes of people people who liaye the benefit of no home train ing for their manners, or any cultivated persons among tlu'ir acquaintance. One fact is true all the wjrld over, that where, by some irealc of nature, a man shows himself superior to his own ( lass in intelligence and talents, he is never content to remain on H,a ! lower stave of the ladder. Many . . , . , j persons assert that the self-made I Man is always the best. In point Of ability he proves without doubt ; ,,,., . ... . . . , ; that he has that within him which has determined his fitness for the I place ne nas earned ior nimsen. But because a man by his brains, energy, and pluck carves out his own fortune, putting himself in a prominent io.sition, is it not very desirable that he should also culti vate the courtesies r f life, so that "WBLA-T IT COSTS TO SHO-E irOTJESELI1 You haven't!? Well let us tell you that by buying a cheap (throwing away your money. Now to overcome this trouble -And we SPECIALTY awn wolmm FLINM BLOOK- ridden by rough- Because a man is a successful law yer, it does not justify him to say that he can be his own tailor, or t'.iat ill-fitting clothes, if belonging t him and of his own make, are as suitable as those of a good cut. So it is with the intellectual giant who takes no heed of his manners. He may learn much from less-talented people, who are nevertheless his superiors in manv things. Desirable :.s it may be for young men to shun the extravagance of the lesthete, and to despise the shams of society, they can not afford to neglect the courtesies of life; and they do well who, while devoting their energies to mathe matics and the classics, pay atten tion to the cultivation in manners. It is while young that manners ar made ; the most strenuous efforts will not remedy or eradicate in after life the gaucheries formed of yo-ith. The Chatauquan thinks that unless a i s i i s:l come to the rescue very soon, another decade will see nearly all of the peculiar wild animals extinct. The grizzlies are disappearing from the Rockies. A live buffalo is now worth from $500 to $1,000, which three years ago cost scarcely one fifth that amount, and they are found almost nowhere but in a corner of Texas and in the Yellow stone Park. The caribou has been hunted almcst out of existence. The mountain sheep, the moose, the beaver, the antelope, are all disappearing. If we are to known anything in the future about our American wild animals, we must arrange right speedily a 'zoo." No one will be sorry to see the grizzlies disappear, but the other animals should be preserved. Lord Sackville West, the Brit ish minister's letters, written from Washington to an English-born citizen of Pomona, Cal., giving his opinion that the Cleveland admin istration was favorable to Great Britain, has created a sensation at. the East, now that Minister West has acknowledged that it is genuine. It promises to prove a deadfall to Cleveland's last hopes. Steamboatjxu will soon com mence on the upper Willamette. Large quantities of wheat are awaiting shipment at river points. Albany needs a city jail and a little vigorous punishment applied to the horde of tramps about the city.
