dressed to the governor-general in
the council has been received by
the department of state from the
inhabitants of Victoria, B. C, beg

not being complied with and their
requirements are not met as they
should be.

quarantine heretofore existing in
this state has seriously interfered
with the political campaign in
Florida, but now that the fever is
abating, mo'e activity is noticed
among the democrats w ho are pre
paring to make a vigorous canvass.
The republicans, however, except
in the second district, which will
be very close, are making no es
pecial effort and no aggressive cam
paign has been inaugurated.

There is about $430,000 belonging
to the city deposited in half a
dozen banks of the city, but the
bondsmen of Thos. Oxw orthy. the
defaulting treasurer, have at
tacned it, and the city treasury is
very near bankrupt. Kangman
Hughes, a member of the city
council, has been placed in charge
of the office. At present there is
only $K000 in the city vault, and
when that is paid out the treasur
er's otlice will be closed for finan
cial repairs.
Montreal. Oct. 24. The Cleve
land detectives arrived here thi
morning in search of Thos. Ox
worthy, absconding city treasurer
of Cleveland. Oxworthy arrived
here on the night of the 30th of
September from .New York and
registered under his proper name
at the Lawrence hotel. He left on
the 2d inst. seaward by a Western
Canadian l'aaific train. While
he.e he consulted with Geoffrion,
Q. C, who informed him that his
offense was extraditable. He ap
peared to be laboring under mentt l
agony. He drank heavily while

R. Shiel, of Shiel & Co., Union
Stock Yards, of this city, is one of
the mast energetic of the Repub
lican workers. He travels consid
erably through the State, and is
brought into contact, daily, with
men from perhaps a score of coun -
ties. Hence, as he knows almost
everybody, and "talks polities''
more than anything else, he should,
be able to form a pretty fair opin
ion of the condition of political
; ffiirs here.
" Prom the reports that come to
me from ail over the State," said
Mr. Shiel, "I anticipate a large
majority for General Harrison.
The changes taking place are in
favor of the Republican party, in
the proportion ot about ten to one.
In some localities there is a regular
stampede from the Democratic to
the Republican ranks, and in many
of the old Democratic strongholds
the old-time majorities will be re
duced so they wiil be scarcely rr
cognizable, or they will be obliter
ated entirely. I now feel abso
lutely certain of this State. While
the Democrats are bringing in a
great deal of money, I Oelieve the
majority which will vote for Harri
son is now so iarge that there are
not sufficient purchasable yotesia
the State to overcome it. Of
course, we propose to watch mat
ters carefully on election day, ami
preyent Democratic frauds as far
as possible. They will attempt to
colonize voters, as usual, but our
men have so thoroughly familiar
ized themselves with 'the various
districts, that I do not believe that
game can Le worked, to any extent
ihia year.
'The Democrats themselves are
getting dLcounged. Those who
are posted as to the condition of
affaire have stopped betting on the
result in Indiana. A few weeks
ago, half the Democrats wanted to
bet ; now, those who made bets
many of them are quietly attemp
ting to 'hedge,' but they Snd it up
hill work, for nobody here seems
to want to bet on Democratic suc
cess,eiiher in Indiana or the whole
couutiy. The general sentiment
a-uong most of the Republicans
now is that we will carry Indiana
hy from 10,000 to 15,000 majority.
I should not at all o; surprised if
our majority exceeded the latter
figure."
"Where are the gains mostly?"
"They are all over the State. In
the new manufacturing districts
there will be Republican instead of
Democratic majorities as hereto
fore. A large portion ot the Ger
man element is coming over ou
the protection issue, and there will
be at least, double as many Iris i
votes for the Republican candida'e
as were given in 1884. A greac
many Irishman of prominence,who
have always worked for the Deino-,
crutic party in years past, are now
working with us, and are accom
plishing grand results. I also
