Daniel Sully, who has just fin ished a successful season in Port land, will appear at the opera house in Albany next Thursday night in the comedy, "Daddy .Nolan." The high opinion in which the play is held is Well ex pressed by the following from tbe "Milwaukee Evening Wisconsin : "Daniel Sully appeared at the opera house, last evening, in his new play, Daddy Nolan. The play is a sequel to The Corner Grocery. For an Irish comedy Daddy Nolan is unusually clever, and "the title role, as presented by Mr. Sully, is a. superior piece of acting of the kind. Daddy Nolan is a delightful mixture of humor and pathos and wins the hearts of the audience -without any apparent eflort. It is a characterization that must be feeii to be appreciated. The other partis are mostly in satisfactory hands. The elaborate realistic setting of the stage is a feature of the performance." Three Kirmways. The truck team of B. M. A gang of about a dozen tough looking itinerants have been mak ing their headquarters in this city recently, seemingly bent on mis chief, bhortly after midnight yes terday morning several of these fel lows were arrested. About 11 o'clock Policeman McClain saw a man approach the door cf W. C. Tweedale's hardware and tin store, and after tampering with the lock for a few minutes effect an en trance. He went to the show case and took $30 worth of razors and knives and came out and went down the street. When in front of Brownell & Stanard's grocery store Officer McCiain saw the burglar drop one of the boxes of cutlei v and pick it up again and nasten on. The officer then started in pursuit. He could not overtake him, but cau :ht two other fellows near the Kevexe house, who had been seen among the gang of toughs earlier in the evening, and after blowing a police whistle and securing the assistance of Officer John Jones, they were led oft" to the city jail, and yesterday were put 1 1 work ou the street. The restaurant of Hermann Diercks was also entered about f e same time of night, probably by one of the same gang. Nothing was taken as the burglar was frightened away, after breaking o jch a trunk and rumaging about the loom for a few minutes. The real burglar, who gave the name of John Cutter, was a-rested yesterday afternoon, but the stolen goods were not recovered. He was arraigned before Recorder Henton, ex-otlicio justice of the peace, and was held without bail or his appearance at y o'clock Monday for examination. He was incarcerated in the county jail. Five more tramps were found hid away in a box car near the depot yesterday afternoon by Co I able oiirkhar.t. They took leg ba-i and left the citv. Uailroatl tlalloi. The following from the Astorian shows that the railroad from Astoria is an assured fact, and will come into the valley somewhere. Our citizens are interested and should have a voice in saying where that some ivhere is: "The Astorian is glad to report favorable - t . ii progress in every department of the Astoria and South Coast railway company's affairs. This is fine weather for railroad surveys and Engineer Thielsen is making the most of it. Secretary Ilolden is meeting with satisfactory success in the matter of the first assess ment levied sometime ago. Col. las. Taylor yesterday hanued him a check for $2500, the amount of his first assessment. Between $41000 and $10,000 is now paid in. Residents of the Willamette valley alive to their interests, are giving considerable attention to tnis matter and the press of the state have none but good words and hearty encouragement for the rail road that Will aid not alone Astoria but the entire state. On account of the attraction at the opera house last evening the audience at the coutt house to lis ten to Hon. Robert McLean, presi dential elector on the republican j ticket, was small. In the absence of the chairman of the central com mittee, and by request, the editor of the Herald introduced the speaker, who in a very pleasant but forcible manner presented the political issues. A joint discussion had been arranged for by the spe cial request of the democratic state central committee, and it was ad vertised that Mr. Skipwoith would speak with Mr.McLean.butMr.8kip worth had onlybeen able to attend the Halsey meeting, and as no ex planation had been given Mr. Mc Lean considered his engagement cficelled and will meet his future appointments alone, as he did the one here, Mr. Skipworth bein i 1 Portland. Mr. McLean met ail of the questions in a fair, square and practical manner, and held the closest attention and appreciation of his audience. A OTflEK I'OIHF.IU.X XKEIMCD. To tiik Editor ok thk IIkrald: Our unusually quiet city is now and probably will lie the remainder of the winter, filled with many hard characters, hence it is hardly right to expect the regular police men to be present at the opera house each evening of an entertain ment and remain during the per formance. We would suggest that the c'.ty marshal appoint a special, other than the attache's of the house, whose business it shall be to be present about the door and insure quietude in the gallery. All other cities have Mich an officer and Albany needs it. Citizen. The Alliaur 4 ollegc. The Albany collegiate institute has been endorsed by the synod of Columbia, and will hereafter re ceive its special care and support. It will be known as the Presby terian college of this synod and has been em lowered and directed to provide college courses of study and give honors and degrees to students completing their courses. Additional endowments will be secured and the future of this in stitution is full of promise. Rev. E. J. Thompson, 1). I)., has been appointed by the synod chairman of the supervisory committee. The number of students at present is not far from one hundred. ' "Widow tt'ltricn." This laughter provoking comedy was given at the opera house last evening to a full house. The act ing was superb throughout.and the music was elegant. Mr. Kelley as the widow was immense, and" was supported by a company, each of whom might safely be rated as star actors. Taking ifaltogether it is a chaste, clean show and number one in all respects. Everybody was delighted with it, and" went home feeling that they had been well repaid in the evening's enter tainment.
