Washington", Oct. l!2. The su
preme court to-day sustained the
constitutionality of the prohibitory
law of Iowa. The point at issue
was the right to manufacturing in
toxicating liquors solely for exjor
tation to other states despite the
state law, and it was pleaded that
the prohibitory measure, in so far
as the manufacture for exportation
was concerned, was in conflict with
the constutional provisions, giving
congress the sole right to regulate
inter-state commerce. The court
holds that the state law is prohib
itory both as to manufacture and
sale, except tor mechanical, medi
cal and sacramental purposes. It
is not in conflict with the inter
state commercial provision,and the
decision of the Iowa court ia sus
tained by the supreme court.
A decision rendeied this afternoon
affirms the light of the state to
prescribe a test for color blindness
among employes of railroads.

ton A. Hill, one of the oldest and
most prominent of St. Louis' citi
zens died yesterday, aed 72 years.
He was a personal friend of Presi
dent Lincoln during the war and
his theory of the scheme of finance
based on legal tender notes was
adopted in 18(11. lie was the
author of a number of works on
political economy.

Parw, Oct. 22. An attempt was
made bv incendiaries to destroy
the Fontailbran forest. Fires were
started in five places and were ex
tinguished with dilfictiltv. The
loss is 250,000 francs. Two men
were arrested on suspicion.

Matters in .t'W England States.

We enjoyed the privilege of at
tending the 'Massachusetts State
Fair held at SpringfieH last week.
There was a fine exhibit of cattle,
horses, oheep, hogs, poultry, vege
tables and fruits, also faim machinery
while the pavilliou was lilted with
exhibitions of art 'and beauty.
Near the center of the grounds was
the large grange tent, capable of con
taining several hundred peale. The
tent was decorated with appropraite
mottoes in various colors, while
iruits and flowers wore abundant.
Congratulations, introductions and
greetings by brother and sister pa
trons were the order of the day, and
all seemed to feel at home in the tent
setjapait for their pleasure and con
venience. During the afternoon a
public meeting was held, consisting
of short addresses and music conduc
ted by Aithur A. Brigham, Master of
the Massachusett State Grange.
In the evening a public grange
meeting was held in the city hall, at
which addresses were delivered by
prominent men in the New England
states. Oregon was also well repre
sented.
During the week we visited the
Connecticut r-xpenmeut station by-
invitation of Secretary T. S. Goie at
New Haven. e. were much in
terested in the explanation
of its work made by rrof.
S. W. Johnson, also in remarks
made by leading agriculturists of this
state, and Prof, Collier of New York.
We find that many farmers complain
of the oppressions placed upon them,
but thus far have been induced to or
ganize. Your Worthy State Master, never
fails to lif1'- his voice in behalf of the
grange, when an opportunity is pre
sented, and all tive your Oregon re
presentatives a hearty greeting.
Bro. Hayes will address several
grange meetings this week in this
state, as invitations are extended on
every hand, many of which ouF-Iimi-ted
time will not permit him to ac

Allison has settled a disputed point, ,
which was caused by an error in the
senate tariff bifl" that made it appeac
that coal was to be on the free list.
Mr. Allison says that it is the inten
tion of the republican members of the
Senate committee on finance, to put
all coal upon the dutiable list, as
now provided; the tariff upon coal to
be made 75 cents a ton, and upon
coal slack 30 cents a' ton.
Chairman Barnum, of the demo
cratic national committee, spent Fr -day
and Saturday in this city, enga
ged in what, to me, appears no whit
better than highway robbery. The
day before his ariival he mailed cir
cular letters to all Government era- "'
ployes here, telling them that he
wished them to call up m him at his
hotel; on Friday and Saturday for
the purpose of making campaign con
tribution?. Those who called upon
him were plaimy infdued that ha
wanted 5 per cent of their annual -salary
for the democratic national'
committee; they were further in
formed tha those who did not come
up with the money asked for, need
not expect to retain their positions
under a democratic administration.
To leave no doubt iu the minds of
the clerks as to the authority which
Mr. Barnum has to carry out his
threats in case of their refusal to con
tribute, they have been informed by
their superior officers that they must
contribute or go, The democratic
party must be desperate indeed, when
it resorts to such means as this tor
the sake of raising a lew dollars.
The show of the city just at present
is sixty Sioux Indian Chiefs, who are
engaged in a grauu pow-wow, the
proposed tieaty by which they are to
