Philosophers in all ages have wrestled with thequestion of what i is to be the final fate of the planet which we inhabit. Some consign it to the fiery flames and others to the opposite extreme, hut all seem inclined to mete out some terrible fate for it. For instance the philosopher of the New York Commercial Advertiser causes the icicles to perambulate the spinal vertebra by predicting a freeze up. ! lie says that of the stars which are on their way to become suns, there j must be many in the depths of space. Some of them are known to us, as the dark companion of Sirius is, because they shine with a feeble and probably a reflected light, while others are wholly unknown to us because they are so dead, or because they are so re-1 mote from other suns, that they emit absolutely no light whatever, proper to themselves or caught from living suns. All they do, and all they will do till the times comes iur cnem to Diaze up so ttiat we shall know of their existence, is to lie perdus in the mysterious depths and suck in heat from the siu , rounding space. So far as we know, there is no reason to believe that at any time our own solar system may not come within the influence of one of these bodies and palpably feel its tremendous power. We may be now, and possibly there is good reason to believe that we actually are, with in the sphere of suck a celestial 'body's attraction. We know with accuracy the course of the planets, but we do not know whit her the solar system is drifting. There was a time when it was believed that the sun, clustered around by planets, was on an exploring ex pedition around Alcyone, but i observations with the spectroscope have shown the theory of Herschel to be untenable. The stars do not hirl about one center; they go in all directions, hither and thither, . some approaching our system, some receding from it. and some going directly athwart the field of view. The story has been put in circu lation that Henry Villard was preparing to take a trip to the south pole. It grew out, it appears, of the fact that he had subscribed to a fund to assist a scientific exploring exoedition into that region.
