THE OKK;V FAtJiiC. More .bmt the Resumption of Work -Paying Up Their Indebtedness. Mr. Wm. M. Hoag, viee-presi-dent and general manager of the Oregon Pacific, and Mr. Abe Hack lemau, one of the directors of the road, lett this city yesterday in a special train, and went to the front over tiie portion of the road completed east of this city, for the purpose of examining the condition of the same be io:e commencing work Mr. Hoag procured a buggy at Hunk ers and started to make a further tour of inspection along the route, while Mr. Ilackleman returned to this city. On his retrrn he talked freely to a Hek.u.d ieporter con cerning the work. He said the company is now better prepared than ever to go on with the work, and has p e t. of n on -y to prose cute it and will at once pay up all their indebtedness. The work on the machine shops, it is expected, will be commenced very soon. It is the intention of the company to push the construction vigorously u itil late this fall. The road will b finished entire as they proceed 0111 the end of the track, and if any con ti acts are let, aside from the work done by the companv, they will be short contracts. Just what deal has been con summated between the Oregon Pacific and Chicago & Northwest ern people has not been divulged, but Mr. Hackleman states that the Oregon Pacific is now on a solid financial oasis, with ample capital to prosecute the work of construc tion to a junction of tiie road with ; tti": Lhicago oc Northwestern at l Boise City, and as several heavy I stockholders of the latter company are actively interested in the Ore gon raciiic, ami have recentiy been in consultation with Win. M. Hoag and other officials of the road, there is little doubt but that the Chicago & Northwestern men have now joined with the Oregon Pacific people for the purpose of pushing it to a connection with their proposed transcontinental line at Boise City. In fact those who are in a position to know state that within twenty-four months the yellow cars of the Chicago & Northwestern will be running through Alb .ny to Yaquina Bay. Soon to Arrive. City Marshal Hays received a postal card yesterday, informing him to look" out for a femaic beggar, who was a bilk of tlie worst kind and possessed of some money. She appeared last even ing according to programme and applied to County Judge D. R. N. Blackburn for a pass to Portland. It is needless to say that it was not given to her, nor did she success fully work her game. Her hus band is said to be in Salem. Services 'al the H. K. Church. The fourth quarterly meeting of the M. K. church will be held to day and Sunday. The quarterly conference of the M. K. church will be held at 8 p. m. A love feast will be held at 10 a. k. on Sundav. Preaching bv the presiding elder, Rev. S. P. Wilson, at 11 a. m. ; Sunday school at 2 :30 p.m. Preach ing at the usual hour in the even ing. This will also be the occa sion of the formal opening of the church since its repairs and re fittins. About Wheal. Harvesting in Linn county has developed the fact that the crop is an unusually heavy one. Wheat in several localities heard from have averaged tlo bushels per acre, while oats has run in some instances as high as 1UU bushels per acre. A Herald reporter, who visited the Willamette Packing Company's establishment in the eastern suburbs of this city yesterday, found about thirty hands busily employed, while on every side were indications of an active season's work. There was to be seen a prolusion of fruit and veg etables in ail stages, from the raw product as it was brought from the gardens to the long ricks of canned goods in attractive labels and neatly cased in boxes containing two dozen cans each. The company has alreadv shipped several car loads to Port- i land, where their pack is- prin cipally engaged to Messrs. Mason, Ehrman & Co., and have ready for shipment now about two car loads. Their pack consists of cherries, beans, peas, and all kinds of small fruits and berries, and a little later they will commence on pears, to matoes, peaches, etc. Their establishment has a capacity of 150 cases perday and their season's pack will probably reach 10,000 cases. Next season they will erect a new building adjoining the one now in use, and increase their business. THE HOM.t.VA 1-R11T TK.IDE. How California is Enabled to Cut Out Ore gon Products. Oregon is much nearer Montana than California is, but the latter state has endeavored to have a monopoly of the fruit trade to Montana. As a rule, however, the ' railroads have endeavored to en courage fruit growers by making low rates. The Southern Pacific company now announces the fol lowing rates on green fruits, etc., from California terminals to Helena. Garrison, Anaconda, Butte and Silver Bow, Montana, and points between : green fruits in car loads, passenger train, $J.25;J freight tram, f l.i2 ; canned trim and vegetables, in carloads, freight train, $1.10. These rates are made with the following restrictions: rates between intermediate inter state points on shipments in tlie same direction must not be higher than the above-named rates. These rates apply from all Cali fornia fruit shipping points, save from points in the Clear Lake, Placerville, Santa Rosa or North ern divisions. Moleu l3ore Kclarnril. The theory generally accepted in that neighborhood is that young MeYay, who stabbed his brother in Benton county, went that way in his flight and "bor rowed" tne animal to hasten his exit. This belief obtains strength from the fact that McVay worked in the neighborhood last winter and was ve!l ae'iainted there. It is supposed that when u::r."! loose the young mare made her way bark without assistance over the same road. A Sailing Race. A sailing match for boats under 20 feet took place from west Ya quina dock last Sunday. Tlie boats entered were Sea Bird, by T. Huntsucker, Boston, Capt. Robin son, White Wings, E. Burrows, and Red Bird, J. R. Scott. The course was down the bay to the buoy off McLains point and return. The race was won by Sea Bird, with WThite Wings second. Another race ojen for all boats will be sailed from Yaquina over the same course next Sundav. A Sea Monster. On a recent trip of the Mischief an animal was hooked and brought to Newport which stumped all the old salts for a name. In appear ance it is of a gray color having a head somewhat the shaoe of a dog's while its holy runs away to a sharp end like a serpent. It is a hideous lookm0- object and is the wonder of all who nee it. Prof. Condon who is there lias not as yet given it a critical examination but inc ines to the opinion that it is & species of wolf fish. Arms Far the National (.uard. Gov. Pennoyer has made a requi sition on the secretary of war for Oregon's portion of arms allowed by the law providing for the arm ing and equipping of the national guard.
