Not a few from the latter State came trorn Atendooino, Colusa and San Beinaidiuo counties. The Big Bend country is being settled up rapidly by those new comers, so are various portions of Oregon and Washington Territory. "The largest month was April, when nearly 8.000 immigrants ar rived. I think August and Septem ber will show larger totals than April did." Every man who thinks at all (anu thinking is a rare gift) has formed some ideal of life. He has his cherished aspirations and secret aims. Some beautiful dream ol youth may have haunted him in manhood, acd hoping against hope he may have been unable to part with it, even in old age. He knows, perhaps, that it can never he realized, that every effort he makes is a Tain effort, and yet he will not let it go, since it would be parting with what is as dear to bini as life. That such a man should suffer from regrets is in evitable, but it is not so certain that he needs our pitv. It is surely better to aspire and to fail than to have no goal for the spirit at all. Perhaps the secret, regrets of life are the weightiest, and chiefly on this account that they are incom niuuieabie. The man who respects himseli, and is conscious that hi: anient hope will never be satisfied does not proclaim his grief to tht win Id, nor, in ail probability, doe: lie teil it to his nearest Iriend. 11' vea-s ins shirt of sackcloth, and conceals it under fine linen. The regrets caused by our own folly or incapacity are among the most painful to endure. A girl, bysom actor waywardness, has lost her lover : a man. bv his careless con ducr, h.-is missed a post that might have led to fame and fortune. A word, a look, an Ubjust suspicion, has broken hearts beloie now; and many a person, owing to a lata! error in youth, has walked ever atteiward in the valley of humilia tion. Then: is no comfort in lee! ing you will act more wisely another time, for that other time neyer conies. You have no more powder in your llask, no more arrows iu your quiver; and now you are 1 ft to bear, as best you may, the consciousness of defeat. There is but one sorrow more lasting and more poignant than this, and thatis when a man knows that his defeat in life's battle has been due to vice or to any laxity of principle. The regrets common to the race, being com num. are more readilv endured. We sutler deeply, but our grief is not without alleviations. As the years move on there is not a mui but may confess with Dogberry that he is -'a fellow that hath had losses." Friends die and leave u., esolate; but our grief, hitter though it may be, is softened bv the thought that those we love have leached the haven where thev would be. It is worth noticing. and indeed, when one comes to think of it, the tact is very signifi cant, that regrets never follow Virtuous actions. -London Illus trated News. RESOLITIOSS OF THANKS. The Kdy a toting Sr! IMscov crest Fi(i;iiiu in the (olumbia. Arlington, June 3. The bodj of a yuiig woman was discovered float ing m the Columbia ly a lishcrnian, named Cape. Babhe. yesterday morn ing near the Willows and word sent to this city to the coroner. Ur. bacon, the county coroner and number of citizens went up to the Willows and an inquest was hel l,but no verdict at as part oi tne lury be lieved the woman came to her neatli by violence and others by drowning. The bodv .was then brought to this city to a watt developments. T There are several theories about the case, one being that the deceased belonged in Goldendalc, W. T. She had a ring upon one ringer, marked T. H. H. to II. 3., or L. A letter was received ay the ticket agent here which inquired about a girl of a like description to the body iottna. The girl inquired aftei in tne letter was calied Rosa Jay Wedge- wood, and the person making the in- , ,- ,1. , 1T quiry signed ninisen, naipn . Schoonover. A girl answering the description came here May 29th, ano just put up at the hotel. The day before the body was found she went away with a man named Al. Wallace, who told some of his friends that the girl was i i trouble and he was going to take her home. Wallace has not been seen since. A doctor who examined the body said there were no marks of violence, but one of the jurors, rrel Varuey, insisted that there was the mark of the blow upon the toreneaa which would have caused death, and refused to assent to a verdict of ac cidental drowning. Professor Procter s Worlds The supposition that there maybe "other worlds than ours" seems toex- cisea peculiar lascination upon the mind of Prof. Richard A. Procter. The "other worlds than ours," of which he speaks, are, of course, hab itable worlds: and from the fact that Mars, for instance, in the solar sys tem, is a planet whose physical fea tures are not so different from those of the earth as to reuder it unhabi table by beins not greatly different from the fauna with which we are ac quainted through actual contact, he judges it tot unreason uble to infer that, being a habitable globe, it is an inhabited one. The bodies that com pose our solar system are much more intimately connected with eaeh other than they are commonly supposed to be, and it is by no means impossible that a oontagiuni of life might spread from one planet to another, just 33 Canada thistle is blowu down on us from the north. According to Sir William Grove, something like two hundred millions of meteorites enter the earth's atmosphere every twenty tour hours, and, though they are pretty hot when they reach the earth's surface, as some of them do, yet it is possible that their high tem perature may not have destroyed all genus of lile, which is conceivable, tlic-y uiignt bring to us. Indeed, there is a soieutilic theory, the upholders of which contend that it was through meteorites that life was originally brought to light on our planet. If life be once granted in any quarter of the universe, there seems to be no good theoretical reason why it should not spread in all directions in which co8iincal winds can blow cosmical dust. Professor Procter is wrong in saying that the question of lite in other worlds "belougs rather to the domain ot pnilosophy than of science. for it belongs to neither, and is a pare speculation, not for a moment o oe dignified with the name of phu o80phy. There may be life in other worlds than outs, or there may not be, and at present tnere is absolutely no w ay of deciding the question. In order to the existence of life, envir onments such as those which earth affords are by no means necessary. Experiments which were , made sub sequently to Dr. Bastian's announce ment that he had proved spontaneous generation otherwise called abiogen is and heterogeneous evolution in the Speucerian liugo showed that living germs could withstand and survive an enormous degree of heat, and it is known that intense colds does no itestroy their vitality. While one is speculitiug it would not be demon strably absurd to say that life could not exist on Mercury or even on the suppositious Vnican, or even in the sun. The life might not, nay, could not, be like that of human beings, but none the less on that account would it be life, and when we n -member that so great a scientific phil osopher as Krnst Haeekel posits life vea in the ultimate atoms themsel ves, where are we to stop?
