This morning at 4 o'chick the Mendine hotel, a thret story brick building, was found ou fire and was qaickly all ablaze. Inside were thirteen persons, only two of who escaped alive. Or. V. A. Brooks, proprietor, was pulled out of the burnin? building with his hair and beard singed off and otherwise, badly burned, leaving behind him his wite and four children, who perished. Peniber ton Pierce, representing the firm of George H. Seigler, of Philadelphia, jumped from the ImrniDg Duilding, and was Killed. D. M. Oldham, of Dallas, representing the firm of F. Cannon & Co, of Galveston, es caped badly siDged. The mystery about the whole thing is that so many should have perished when none were higher up than the second story, and there were gal leries and exits on both sides of the building occupied by the sleepers.. No one was heard to call nr scream, all dying without aery for help, though a great crowd quickly gathered and exhaused every effort to anord rescue. Ine pecuniary oss is small.
