The importance of free and per fect respiration as the foundation of health is too much neglected. People do not generally understand that the skin shares in the function of respiration, and that if this is interfered with death is apt to ensue, though this is due not so much to aphyxia as to some form of blood-poisoning caused by the constituents of the perspiration being re-absorbed into the blood. A striking illustration of the neces- sity of leaving the skin open to ' some extent to the action of air is afforded by the fact that a child who was coated with gum and then covered with gold-leaf, to repre- sent a cherub at the coronation of j Pope Leo X., died in a fe.v hours after the operation. A similar fate nearly befell Gustave Dore in the days of his youth, when a passing -caprice made him go to a fancy j ball as "Un Monsieur Dore;" bat j as in his case the gilding was only I partial, he survived, though he did j not escape a sharp illness. j I Perhaps fe prominent oper ators in stocks and financial mat ters who have met with the abso lute collapse that Henry Villard did has succeeded m arising irom , but one metuoci was known for ac the failure and again becoming j complishing a certain result, ; prominent. The Chronicle thinks j Whitney might reach it by a scratch ; the rise of Villard from his t'i.as-j but jf there were right or correct trous failure with the Northern ! methods and wrong ways of doing Pacific shows that he possesses j it? it was safe aiways safe to bet ne ; iinusuaj abilities as a financier. It j nad f0nowed the blind guide and i is the (exception when a man is tumbled into the ditch. His! completely ruined in Wa.l street j Diunjr while district attorney, in for him to recover hie lost prestige. jchaiging a culprit with having . Jim Keene is a good example of atolen a "shall" (shawl), and his i the up-hill work that is necessary j severe reprimand by Judge F.on-j when money and influence are uam? an(j tjie demurrer to the in-1 gone. Villard seems to have per- i dictment which was sustained by suaded his European backers that ; he could still be of great service to j them, and what he has done since j his rethirn shows that he made no idle boast. i . . rtf The action of the young scion ot , ... , . .,:,. the Vanderbilt house in marrying a worthy young lady, and then deserting her on the plea that his father objected to her and he could not make a living without the aid of his fcther, exhibits the example of a 'pusillanimous son and a morally culpable father in interfer ing with the domestic relations of the son. H. H. Hewitt, candidate for prosecuting attorney, stands well as a lawyer among his fellow mem bers of the bar. He will make an aide and efficient prosecuting at torney. Vote for him. Salem Statesman. THE C0UHTY JUDGESHIP. To tub "Editor of thr HkeAld ; I have read with interest and no little amusement a communication by "Democrat" in your paper and the answer thereto, published re cently in the Evening Democrat. The assertions of "Democrat" strikes home, backed up as they are by incontrovertible proof. The ' voters of the "Forks" say they would tike to know why the affi davit of Ad Harmon is considered by the Daily Evening Democrat a full and complete warrant for al lowing a claim not allowed by law ; and why Harmon's affidavit before the county clerk is oi so much more binding force upon the county court than the affidavits of the j road supervisors of Linn county, j made before the same officer, and j as Mr. Harmon is a resident of i the "Forks" the voters there are ! directly interested. We pause for j an explanation, and upon the ex lanation depends the votes of more than one hundred democrats. We would like to have Judge Whitney explain why other men Mr. Harmon laims agains-t presented them f"r allowance to the county court, and they were often disallowed or cut down from twenty-five, to seventy-live per; cent, without anv notice to the ! claimant, and without any knowl- j edge on the subject other than that ! afforded by the verified claim, and that all in favor of the claimant. Can it be true vhat the oath of poor men, road supervisors and othrs, who are obliged to earn their bread by the sweat the face, is not entitled to the same credit and consideration as the saloon-keeper of the stamp of Ad Harmon? That the oath to aj claim by a road supervisor, admin- j istered as the law provides, does: j not establish a prima facie case ?j Surely if we read the law aright, j there is no distinction ; yet, if the j acts of Judge Whitney, and the article in the Democrat, interpret ' the law correctly, there must be a distinction, because the article in tue JJemocrat, a it means any thing, means that because the witness meaning Ad Harmon, the i saloon-keeper presented hisclaim, j properly verified, to the county? court for allowance ; therefore, there is no condemnation of the I cunty court for the allowance, j that the court is justified in allow-' ing him what he was not entitled to receive, allowed him for 108 ; miles travel, when, if he was j really subpoenaed in feio and j actually traveled to Albany and back to Scio, he was entitled to pay for but 36 miles. These are i facts, and if you will examine the records you can satisfy )rourselves. ! And if you will take the trouble to make even a cursorv examination of the records of this county, dur-j ing the years of Whitney's incum bency of the office of county judge, yon will be amply compensated ; for the expenditure of time and . trouble by the discovery of unmip takable evidence that his claims as a disciple of economy, in adminis- ; tering the financial affairs of the ! county, are not established by very large majority, with several precincts to hear from. That said claim is based upon evidence very similar to that upon which his ' fame as a stump ori.t r, distrkti attorney and skillful political ; manipulator rests, to-wit: His own noise and ''blow." It has ; b;;en repeatedly averred that as I district attorney and judge where I the court) is weli known, and fur-! niges, s the boys say, a "whole iot ot- valuable commentary on hi8 qualifications as an officer, Some of the older settlers will be rc - minded of the late I.
