cinnabar, or native vermilion, is from
quicksilver ore.

San Franolsro Call's 'Views
Ihe WmI Question.
San Francisco, May 17. The
Call has the following editorial to
day: "A Democratic canvass is being
conducted in Oregon on the free wool
basis. An Oregon contemporary calls
attention to the fact that four years
ago the Democratic complaint was
that the tax on foreign wool was not
high enough. The California State
Democratic p!atform then declared
that "the present tariff on wool is an
unjust diserimnation against that
great industry, and we denounce the
same, and demand a restitution of
the tariff of 1867." Mr. Chveland's
free trade message, has convinced
these Democratic leaders that they
were wrong in denonncing the pres
ent tariff on wool as not high enough.
Mr. Cleveland tells them that it is too
high, and they accept the dictation of
a man who has all the offices at his
disposal.
"The people of Oregon will soon
have an opportunity to let the coun
try know what they think of free
trade. A hunger and thirst for offices
may take the backbone nut of the
leaders of the party, but the mass of
--he voters will not. we trust, be
caught with such chaff."

lowing particulars of the new law
abolishiug slavery in Brazil have
been received: All emancipated
negroes now on coltee plantations
are required to remain there until
the next coffee crop is gathered,
but in the meantime they are 1
receive a small rate of wages from
their former owners, and shall not
be located up in their quarters as
formerly. Former owners receive
no compensation for liberated
slaves. Nearly 1 ,500,000 slaves are
liberated by the new law. In rec
ognition of this enlightened meas
ure in removing the last vestige of
slavery from the new world, the
pope has sent a golden rose to the
princess regent of Brazil.

Ail Alleged Wife Boater Taken Into
the Woods ana Whipped.

Smith Ilogan, of Spencer county, a,
member ot the (i. A. K. and a pen
sioner, was taken to the woods by
"White Caps" switch committee,
a few nights ago and given sixty
lashes on the bare back for alleged
wife beating. Hogan was leit gag

men driving a herd ot stolen ponies
in No Man's Land Thursday night
and lynched the whole party. Two

the 1st of Jauuary in this city, and
the dozen murderers are now iu bus
tody awaiting trial. The number of
murders is far in excess of the usual
average, and it is further remarkable
that of these twelve, eight, or exactly
two-thirds, were women murders,
the victims ranging between the ges
of 20 and 35.

30; Patrick Packenhain, April 2;

liam Armstrong, April 9.
The last execution which occurred
in this city was that pf Daniel Dris
coll, convicted of the murder of Bezie
Garrity. The ' murderer last sen
tenced in New York was Francis
Pitt man, found guilty of the murder
of his own daughter, Rachel; and the
murderer next to suffer the death
penalty here, if the courts do not
interfer to stay the . execution, is
Adolph Reich, who killed his young
wife of whom he was jealous, in Nor
lolk street several months ago.
The number of woman murders is
entirely unprecedented. In the cases
where women are the victims, the
plea of self-defense, so generally
relied upon in other instances, can
rarely be interposed. The woman,
unarmed, unnerved passive, and
sometimes pleading, is at the mercy
of the assailant, whose stronger hand,
surer aim and steadier purpose deals
