The canvass in Linn county will open to-morrow at Fox Valley. Badeav is still pushing his suit against the lair memory of Gen. Grant. Gen. Beems' widow, it is said, will engage in newspaper work in New York city, as soon as she can settle the rumors started over the mystery connected with her hus band's death. . Hon. Geo. H. Williams will speak at the court house in this city to-morrow evening. He is one of Oregon's ablest men, and should be heard by every one who wishes to hear a powerful speech. One of the very essential mat ters to look after in every city is that of pure water for culinary ; use and drinking purposes. Health, welfare and prosperity depend upon it. Albany should be aiive upon this subject, as well as upon nu- 1 merous other ones that she has shown enterprise and push in put ting forward. The Willamette valley seems to "be afflicted with a gang of second Tate safe breakers. They invari ably do a bungling job, but always manage to cany off the money. As no special reward has been offered for their capture, detectives have as yet been unable to locate these light-fingered gentry. Henry George seems to be the target of ill fortune all around. William Hutchins, an eccentric admirer who recently died, be queathed George ten thousand dollars, but the court of chancery -has decided that the bequest is illegal and therefore void, so the great land doctor will have to get along without the case which was intended to assist in developing his peculiar theories. Gen. Lucius Fairchild, of Wis consin, says of Judge Gresham that he is a man who has the im- j , . f i mense advantage of possessing a splendid military record in addi- tnnn tn an fl.rimira.hl civil Career. and that he is the strongest candi date the republicans can nominate. And he might have added that just at present his prospects for nomination are ahead of every other candidate. The Scofield-Hatch case in New York, resulting in rinding the dead body of Hatch in the yard adjoin ing the Scofield mansion after he had accompanied Mrs. Scofield home at a late hour, and caused a scene with the lady's husband, in being investigated by the coroner, developed numerous cases of the pusillanimous habit of writing anonymous letters. Such missives should never be noticed in legal proceedings nor anywhere else. The trial of Landreth, the fiend ish murderer of his stepdaughter in Polk county last January, will begiu at Dallas on Monday, the 2Sth inst. He is said to have no hope of escaping the gallows. Theie is certainly little ground to build any other expectation upo:?. Polk county is not likely to give Judge Lynch a chance to swing th's murderer off this time, and considering the fact that Landreth has just now discovered that insan ity was the cause of the murder this do ige ianot likely to save his neck. TEMPERANCE K0TE3, j Contributed bv the VV. C. T. Y:. ' At the regular meeting of the ; union Tuesday afternoon a lengthy i and interesting report of the state t convention was read by the presi- j dent. A steel engraving of the proposed temperauce temple, to be erected in Chicago, was presented to the union by Mother Fisher, who procured it by making up what is known as a "Baby Band." Mrs. Fisher secured the names of 125 children between the ages of 3 and 5 years. Each of the children donated ten cents to the temple fund, thus securing to Mrs. Fisher the engraving. The picture will be framed and have a place in the new hall. The juvenile work was put into the hands of a committee of ladies, namely: Mrs. Sox, Shane, McAlister, Webb and Hen drickson, and will hereafter re ceive special attention. The business meetings of the union, which have sometimes been so lengthy as to inconvenience some of the members, will hereafter, by a vote of the union, close at five o'clock. In the recapitulation of the re port of the superintendent of young women's work at the state conven tion, we find the following items of general inierest: There are now twelve young woman's unions in the state ; these have a total mem bership of 442, which represents 298 active and 149 honorary member.'. This number does not include the membership of East Portland and CorvaUis (their number not being reported). The whole amount of money raised during the year: $885.05. Eugene is the banner union in point of numbers, having a majority over all others of 14 active and 25 honorary members. The Dalles shows itself to be the financier of the state, having raised the largest amount of nionev. I Pendleton takes the honor of hav ing distributed the largest amount of literature, also has the largest subscription to our national organ. Astoria shows the greatest enter prise in taking 25 shares of stock in the Pacific express, in holding 45 regular meetings during t year and in distributing the largest number of boquets. Albany carries the broom in campaign work, hav ing raised and spent in round numbers $104.60, $84.00 more than any other union. All the others did we'd and each deserves its meed of praise. This department is now in the hands of Miss Emma C. Warren, of Astoria, a wise en ergetic woman, who will press this work with vigor. The state: convention voted to giye special attention this year to gospel temperance, and if possible j bring some noted worker in that j line into the state and make a j thorough canvass. Maj. Hilton, of I Washington, D. C, was favorably- spoken of. Our opportunity is the measure of our responsibility. Let us aim for more work as well as better work this year. Let us study, i with a view to self-culture. "If thou another soul would'st reach. Thou must thyself be fed.'' NEW TO-DAY. Wood Wanted.
