Hood prevailing along the Missis
sippi river has never been equaled,
except in 1851. Ten days, ago the
w?.ter reached the dangej point,
and since tlierr-ifc ira's been iiteadil y
rising at the rate, of from four to
fourteen inches daily ,and the worst
to come. Thousands of acres are
covered with water, and hundreds
of families are driven from their
homer? at a minute's notice. The
loss to farmers is incalculable, as
the district flooded comprisese the
valley. On the embankment of the
river hundreds of cattle, horses and
hogs are gathered without feed.
while across on the opposite bluff
can be seen hundreds ot men,
women and children, desolate, for
lo.'n and despairing. Many are
destitute and suffering for food.
Communicatian with this side is
entirely cut on, every roan ieing
covered with water. The factories
and warehouses along the river are
seriously embarassed, and large
buildings are gradually ben.g
undermined bv the rushing waters.

centennial meeting ot the Presby
terian general assembly, supreme
ecclcisasf.cal court of the Presbyter
ian church in the United States be
gan in this city this morning, with
over 500 delegates and cominission
eis in attendance representing every
state and territory in the Union .
The commissioners assembled in
Horticultural hall, and at about 10
o'clock, haying formed in proces
sion in state delegations, marched
to the First Presbyterian church,
the oldest in the city. A dense
crowd of people surrounded the
cnurch, anO as many as could gait
admission quickly crowded it to
its utmost capacity. Hundreds
were turned away.
After religious exercises, came
the opening address of Moderator
R;v. Dr. Smith. It comprised an
xhaastiye sketch of the rise and
growth ot the Presbyterian church,
and referred particularly to the or
ganization of the first Presbyterian
synod, and the first general assem
bly, in this city.
The first business session of the
assembly was caiieu toorderat 2:30
P. M. in Horticultural hall.
Without transacting any business
the assembly adjourned till 4:30 p.
m. and when it reassembled
proceeded to the election of a mod
erator, which resulted in the choice
oi Rev. Dr. C. L. Thompson, of
Kansas City. He was inducted to
oifice, and the convention adjourn
until to-morrow.

Magee, commander of the depart
ment of ii. A. R., has issued a
general order taking to task E. F.
Baker, of post No. 8, for its acts in
electing Joe Johnston, confederate
commander to contributing mem
bership. Col. Magee says that con
tributing, honorary and associate
memberships are without authori
ty or law and in conflict with the
rules and regulations. In all cat es
where posts have applied to him
to receive members, other than
regular members of the posts, who
were eligible under the rules and
regulations, the applicants have
been refused. The practice must
be at once discontinued.

supplementary report made yes
terday on the investigation of
Treasurer Tate's office shows that
$18,000 in taxes paid in by the
Kentucky Central railroad, has not
been accounted for. This swells
the defalcation to .f.24,700.

Old World Politics.
Lonoox, May 18. A council of
the Liberal Radicals Union of Lon
don has decided to hold a great
meeting in St. John's hall on June
7th to protest againsc the coercion
act and the government's treat
ment of political prisoners. The
lord mayor refuses to lend Guild
hall for public discussions on the
country's defense. He believes a
strong feeling exists that this dis
cretionary ambition has already
gone too iar.
Emperor Frederick' Health.
Berlin, May 18. A bulletin is
sued this morning says : The em
peror is without fever. The diffi
culty he experienced in swallowing
has nearly disappeared. His gen
eral condition is satisfactory, and
he will be allowed to spend the
greater part of the day in the open
air. His strength is increasing,
and there is less secretion of pus.

Ottawa, May 18. The govern
ment railway statements for the
year ending July 1st, show an in
crease of trafic greater than at aHy
previous year; amounting to $5,
500,000, miles of railway complet
ed 12,3o2,capital paid up $683,773,
00, net earnings $11,227,000.
Flood in Arkanun.
Fayettville (Ark.), May 18.
It has rained incessantly for the
last thirty -six hours, and White
river, a usually peaceable stream,
is rushing in torrents five miles
wide.

build a new Bteel factory and
works near Amen, Westophelia.
The works at Essen being unable
to cope with the increased business.

Stockholm, May 18. Dr. Fritz,
with four Norwegians and two
Laplanders, has started for . Green
land to explore the east coast.
The influence of the moon upon
vegetation is an interesting pro
blem awaiting solution. A recent
writer on the subject mentions
that wood-cutters in Cape Colony
an 1 in India insist that timber is
full of sap and unfit to be cut et
full moon. Another observation of
lunar influence in Cape Colony is
the rapid spoiling mt meats and
other provisions when exposed to
moonlight, though this may be due
to the fact thai the light serves as a
guide to insects.
