will have to be supplied periodically

way a sort of connected graphoplioue
system be established. Or - there
may be some other way. Anyhow,
the instruments will be leased.
The graphophone is an instrument
smaller thau the ordinary typewriter.
It makes a permanent record of every
sound transmitted to it, and can re
peat .he sound at any subsequent
pe riod as many times as one pleases.
Mr. Levy, the cornet player, for in
stance, juuyed "Home, SweetHome."
in four octaves to a graphophone over
at Mr, Lombard'e office, and now
every stockholder or other individual
who is allowed to see the grapho
phone at work is favored with
Home, Sweet Home," in four
octaves as aforesaid. All Mr. Lom
bard has to do when he wants a tuae
is to take out whatever wax cylinder
happens to be in the instrument at
the moment and insert in its place
the wax cvlinder that was there
when Mr. Levy was playing. You
just press a button and the brass
band begins to play. In this way
one of Patti's $1,000 songs eaa be
repeated ?00 times at pleasure. Five
hundred is about the limit. After
that the wax begins to chip, and the
graphophone gets hoarse. And Patti's
songs can thus be hnnded down to

The Oregonian tells of a beautiful
specimen of the night bloomingcereus
that bloomed in a shop window in
lhat city yesterday. Early in the
afternoon, the long light green
blosson , resembling much an un
opened water lily, beu to swell,
and give evidence of its" early matur
ity. A little after 6 o'clock the
lirst petal ot green, fell away from
the bud and just at sun set, the
whole burst into bloom and from then
u ;il midnih. thr- glorious st-r-lihe
-flower kept on expanding. When at
its best it measured thirteen inches
n diameter. After '2 o'clock, it
bep.au to fade and droop away and
this morning it is a thing of the past.
The long, delicate snow-white
petals 6urround the cream colored
pistil, which in jts turn is surrounded
by myriads of white, golden crowned
stamens springing from the deep,
fragrant center. Mr, Rockenfield's
plant is very line and strong; is five
years old and has seven other buds,
which wdl come out during the next
six weeks. But little is apparently
known of the night blooming cereus.
