Miissippippi is blow ly abating and
it is thought that the worst is over.
A trip through the submerged dis
trict shows that the reports ot loss
and suffering have not been exag
gerated. Over 550,000 acres of the
richest-farming. lands in the state
are covered with " water from six to
ton feet deep. Damage to farms,
mills and railrcsd property has
been enormous, the aggregate
will reach ifo.000,00:) on crops
alone. Damage to levees, houses
and railroads will approximate
$000,000. Much sickness prevails
among the people, who nave been
driven from their homes by the
hoods, owing to want ana expos
ure. Measures have, however,
been taken to alleviate their sul-
furings.

French and six otliers have been
indicted lor the killing of J. C.
Everson six weeks ago. Kverson
was shot from ambush. His mur
der was the result of a feud be
tween himself and French of four
years standing, during which at
one time factions occupied opposite
ends of town a hundred strong and
heavily armed. It was settled at
the time but soon broke out again.

Cleveland will be his title, if by a
chain of accidents similar to those
which elected him in 1SS4, he should
be re e'ected this year. He is al
ready the autocrat of the democratic
party. The democrat who retuses to
obey his slightest nod is sent to the
rear at otce, no matter how high lie
may have stood with his party
Samuel J. Randall, who has more
than once saved the democratic party
from going to pieces, incurred the ill
will of the democratic boss, because
he would not support the Mill's tariff
bill. Cleveland sent out orders that
Randall was to be disposed from the
leadership of the democratic party in
Pennsylvania. With the assistance
of the the federal offices in that state
the orders were carried out to the
letter.
But Cleveland is not yet satisfied.
He wants to have Randall defeated
for the nomination to the House.
Cleveland's nearest friends openly
boast of this sort of work, and say
that he intends to snub every man
who refuses to vote for the Mill's
tariff bill and that lie also proposes
to us:e the entire power of the admin
stration to defeat theii nomination
for Congress.
Last week the President vetoed a
public building bill for Allentowu
Pennsylvania, because, (it is stated)
Mr. Snowden, who represents that
district in the House, had refused to
vote for the Mill's bill, aad now his
friends say that he has Mr. Snow
deu's defeat for re-nomination to
Congress assured. These are not
merely republican charges against
Mr. Cleveland, they are the openly
made boasts of his nearest friend and
adviser. The country never before
had but one President who descend
ed to such politics, and that was An
il re w ' Johnson, Let Cleveland be
ware of his fate.

The democrats of the House are in
a terrible muss ovei this same Mill's
tariff bill. They have caucused
several times without being able to
determine just what they will do.
The last caucus decided that all who
desired to offer amendments to the
bill should first submit them to the
democratic members of tlie ways and
means committee for consideration,
and report to another caucus. The
result has been a deluge of amend
ments. The average member is will
ing to take away the last vestige of
protection from some other member's
district, but he wants all he can get
for his own.
How they will settle the thing is
hard to say, but one thing is quite
sure, it would be absolutely impos
sible to pass tlie bill as reported from
the committee, and it is doubtful it
can be tinkered up sufficiently to get
the democratic vote of the House.
The general debate on - the bill has,
by mutual conseut, beeu extended to
next Saturday.
The House committee on military
affairs have made a favorable report
on the bill authorizing the President
to nominate for retirement with the
full rauk and regular pay of
Major-General such ex-army officers
now in civil life as were promoted
for gallantry or good conduce to the
grarie of Major-General and com
manded departments or divisions.
The list of those affected by the bill
is very small, nod includes Generals
llosecrans. Scl.euek. McCauiev.
j Palmer and Buell.
A bill has been iutroduced in the
House to prevent convict labor trom
competing with organized labor. It
provides that all couvicts employed
within the jurisdiction of the United
States shall be employed at such la
bcr as chey may be best suited to
perform, and semi-monthly si.all be
paid the same rate of compensation
as is paid to organized labor in the
locality where the convict is confined.
No convict is to be required to work
more than eight hours a day. The
bill carries with it an appropriation
of 1.000,000, to be expended by the
Secretary of the department of labor
in giving it effect.
The Senate passed a bill forfeiting
all unearned railroad laud grants;
alsa the international copyright bill;
and quite a number of bills for public
buildings. It has also ratified the
Chinese treaty.
The $20,000,000 river and harbor
bill passed the House by more than
two-thirds majority.
Senater Voorhees finally concluded
that he was indebted to the dignity
of the Senate to the extent of an un
qualified apology for his recent bad
language, and paid the debt.
J he nomination ot Mr. Fuller to
be Chief Justice of the United States
is now in the bauds of a sub-committee
of the Senate committee on the
judiciary, for investigation. Their
report will probablv be made inside
ot two weeks.
There wilt be special memorial
services held on decoration day at
the tomb of Gen. John A. Logan,
under the auspices of the G. A. R.
Gen. Logan was the originator of
decoration day.
