weeks of his sentence of one year's
imprisonment, on account of a
technicality. "When the legisla
ture held that a sentence lor felon
ies should not begin to run until
the prisoner was actually locked
up, it did not mention misdemean

spent, by Grattkan in jail pending
appeal to the supreme court, will
he applied on the original sentence.
The district attorney will take the

ness, and the grange adjourned to
attend an open meeting at the
state capitol.
AFTERNOON SESSION.
At 2 p. ii. the grange assembled
at the state house and was called
to order by the worthy master,
who introduced Governor Pen
noyer, and he addressed the au
dience Jin an eloquent manner, re
viewing the history American agri
culture and the growth of Ameri
can freedom, lie was followed by
Hon. John Minto, who expressed
the hearty appreciation of the
grange for the governor's kindly
reception, and reviewed the ques
tionsthat particularly interest farm
ers at present, on the question of
taxation and the system of raising
revenue. j
Hon. J. J. Murphy, mayor of
the city of Salem, was introduced
and w elcomed the state grange to
the city, and expressed the growth
and importance of Oregon and tho
advantageous work of the order- of
P. iron..; of Ilusbandrv. lie ma le
S some very pertinent remarks upon
the question oi ellectiug assessment
and taxation , and closed by saying:
"'After listening to the remarks of
our granger friend, who replied to
his excellency, and knowing that I'
am to be followed bv another
granger, I conclude that I had bet
ter not. monkey with the tariff."
Jion. Geo. Downing followed
with remarks applicable to the oc
casion. .
Judge Boise, worth v master of
the state jrrange. then followed
w ith his annual address, reviewing
in his usual able manner the con
dition, growth and prosperity of
the order. He reviewed the prin
ciples and aims of the order, and
showed that it is constantly ex
tending in influence and prosper
ity, j
