H. Hewitt, candidate for prosecuting attorney on tlie repul -lioan ticket, is capable, honest and deserving. He should receive t e united support of his party. li s opponent, Mr. Belt, is also a good, square man, but he is a democrat, an 1 he cannot expect republican support." And the Statesman might have added that although Mr. Belt is a very good man, he is no kind of a lawyer. His bungling manner of drawing up papers at court in Albany has more tin n once allowed criminals to go free. "We want a man for district attor ney who has experience and ability enough to properly draw up indict ments and to prosecute criminals in a thorough manner. Newton M4rriiii to Cleaner-!" Elsewhere in this issue is pub lished a call for a citizens' meeting for the purpose or organizing a board of trade. The necessity for S ich an organization and the ben efits to be derived therefrom, have I besn often referred to in these columns, and are too apparent to need any comment. j The call for the meeting is sub- j scribed by leading business men and citizens, who?e work in a board of trade will insure its use fulness and success. There- are many questions toucmr.g the ad vancement of the business inter ests of this jity that with a board of trade as a nucleus of definite ' action, will be promoted, which heretofore have been neglected, simply because what is everybody's business is nobody's business. The meeting for the purpose of organ izing the board of tride will be an fmportaut one, and should be at tended by business men generally and no pains spared to bring the organization into a vigorous aud healthy working existence. At a recent banquet of the fed eral club, the new and important republican organization in New York city, Eliioit F. Shepherd, who recently bought the Mail and Express from Cyrus W. Field, nominated Depew for the presi dency. His remarks were re ceived with cheers. Depew was asked what he had to say. He declared that he was not a candi date, as he had all along announced and that he was very much sur prise'', fit Shepherd's nomination. Sher-hsrd said his paper would support the nominee of the Re publican Convention, and e thought it -would be Depew, desp:te all the effort to the contrary. D pew is for Blaine, and this is the way he expressed himself; "I an' a Blaine man first and last an i i. I the time. All my Presidential preferences are Blaine. I never ! expect to get the nomination, but I firmly believe that Blaine will. Mr. Blaine's letter was sincere, but mark you, Mr. Blaine never said Ise would refuse the nomination. He merely said his name would not foe presented to the Conven tion. If Mr. Blaine is drafted to the service, so to speak, and his nomination unanimous. I have no doubt he will accept it, and he will be the candidate of the Rej,u.ii can party this Fall." Cantributed by the W. C. T. U. The annual state convention of the women's christian temp' "ance union will be held in Eug-: City May 9th. Each local uni is a representation of one dej te at large, one for every twer mem bers and one for a f- ion over ten. The valley u., should send their full quota i legates, as those of Eastern On ..n, espe pecially, will, on accoiKit of the expense of travel send their full number. The first session will bo held on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. Interesting programme have been prepared for the even ings. The national bureau of statistics shows that on the 700,000,000 which annually passes into the tills of the retailers of intoxicating iiquors in this country, there is a profit of 133)4 per cent. If the poor people had to pay such a tax as that on bread there would be a rebellion. But when a man tosses off a glass of whisky, and pays five cents for the drink and seven or eight cents to the barkeeper for the trouble of handing it to him, he generally thinks the barkeeper is an awfully good fellow. A new form of temperance or ganization, upon the "ten-timee-o"e-are-.ten" plan, designed espe cially for commercial travelers aud business men, has lately been started by S. A. Haines, a New York business man residing at Netherwood. Its-pledge is: "1. To drink no intoxicating liquors. "2. To get an others to join the league." Its badge is i neat lapel button with the initials C. T. L. on the face of it. Among those interested in the new movement is the Rev. Edward Everett Hale, who represents the first "Ten" in Boston. THE OLD WAT THE NEW WAY "Every housekeener knows from experience the lifcrd labor reciuii id to wash floors and wring the cloths by hand. Bv using tho jtewton self-wringing floor cleaner, wringing the cloth by hand is avoided, the hard labor is thereby les sened; the hands do not come in contact with the water, whereby you can use boiling and ammonia water. The Newton self-wringing floor clef ner is light, durable and simple in construction, and well merits the claim of being the best invented.
