STITES. VM tt i inn IMA lll'A 11 hum OFFEH Editor Stites .has commenced the baby act rather early in the cam paign. When some of his empty sophistries, printed under the head of editorial, were punctured by the Herald he puts on his war paint and shouts, "you lie." Now, Thomas that isn't nice, and is not becoming a clean family newspa per, although it is not more than might be expected of the Demo crat. If you want to engage in controversy get up on the plane in which men move and leave oil' your Salvation Army billingsgate, stand off and look at yourself and then go and take a bath, and don't throw mud, for decent people will not care to follow you. The total production of wheat in the United states for 1836 is set down by the statisticians of the de partment oi agriculture at Wash ington at 456.329,000 bushels. Dakota leads with 52,406,000, In diana is second with 37,828,000, Illinois third with '36,861,000 and Minnesota fourth with 36,299,000. Ohio follows close upon Minresota and California, at considerable iu tervaL, follows Ohid. The statistician's estimate gives the yield of the Pacific t ites and territories as follows: California, 30,426,000 bushels; Oregon, 16, 100,060 ; Washington, 8,345,000: Idaho, 1,120,000; Nevada, lll.OOo! Every one or the states and ter ritories produce wheat, but the yield of some are very small. Massachusetts is credited with but j 16,000 bushels, Connecticut with but 37,000, and New Hampshire witn only 110,000, or just ahoi t the same as Nevada. Some of ti e .Southern states produce a j;ood deal oi wheat. Tennessee is cred ited with 9,595,000 bushels, North Carolina with 5,049,000 and Georgia with 2.522.000. The states; known formerly as the ' bolder slates" produce a great deal of this cereal : thus, Missouri is set down 'for 27,440,000 bushels, and Kentucky for 11,113,000. Neither New Yoik or Pennsylvania produces so much as Oregon. It is estimated that 200,162.000 bushels ,of the crop of 1887 have been or will be consumed in the localities where the wheat was jrown, and 250,166,200 bushels have been or will be shipped away. In we;Sut, per bushel, wheat grow a uu the Pacific coast is heaviest. That of Oregon is 59.7 pounds, that of Washington the same, and thas of California a trifle less. reel from 'Frisco a specialty. Oharles Dickens, sou of his jtther, the English novelist, who i now making the tour of this C antry, is of the opinion that many Americans, while bairg larniliar with the English novelists and historians, actually needed an introduction to American authors. I le found many of the writings of Washington Irving and Nathaniel . Hawthorne. Perhaps literary pi rac, as it was called, which ena bles publishers to flood the country with cheap editions of foreign authors, while the works of Ameri can writers are protected by copy right, and consequently are among the high priced books, is account able for much of this condition.
