' Tlie sedimentary rocks m tbeir groat thickness inclose a succession of water-sheet or water levels, oc ciunniif distinct stages and extend o4 with uniform characters under whole countries, like the strata to which they are subordinated. It is o roper to remark here that by the term water-sheet is not nient a real bed of wa'er lodged in a cavity be tween solid masses .that s'jrve as walls to it, but water fiilribg e minute 10'erstices ot i lie o:jcks or a rock. Continuous and ugulariu sand these sheets are usually dis- ::ontiuii(ius and iitsular in lime stones and sandstones, in which the water only oecups more or ess spacious fissures. When natural issues are want ing human uioustry is auie, oy iioiino;, to make openings clown to dm sul)terrauein waters, which it cnus s to jet up to the surface and soaieimes to a considerable height above. The thought of undertak ing such works is a very ancient one. The Egyptians had recourse to them fort? centuries ago; and they were executed in France in 1126 at Artois, whence the name of artesian wells have bieu given to them. Tlie water levels of the cretace ous sirata, from which the French irtesiau waters issue, are not always of advantage; but in the north of France and in Belgium they con ct".tute the most formidable obstacle wLich inineis have to encounter in reaching the coal beds. A stiiking confirmation of the theory of the source of supply of the artesian waters has been ob served in Tours, where the water, spouting with great velocity from a -well one hundred and ten metres in depth, brings up, together with fine sand, fresh water, shells and seds n such a state of prpserva tion as to show that they could not have been more than three or four mouths on their voyage. Some of i lie welh of the Wady Rir have :ilso ejected fresh water molluscs, ush and crabs, still living, which must, therefore, have made a still mere rapid transit . SCKAP4 4F SC1ESCE. A paper that i esis s..the action of both lire god water , has, it :ij' a&idj 1 n recently invented in Germany by a Heir Ladewig. The manu facture is accomplished by mixing Lwrnty-fiye paits of asbestos liber with from twenty-five to thirty part of aluminum suphate. and the mixture is moistened w.th chloride of zinc and thorougly washed in water.- It is then treat ed with a solution of one part of resin in soap in eight or ten parts of a solution of pure aluminum j sulphate, after which it is manu j factu red into papr like ordinary j pulp. i On the coast of the Grecian is land Cephalornis is a large number ol fissures or pits in which the cont oned Iresh r salt water rises ana ialls like the sea outside, t hough the water-level inside i ' four leet lower than outside. What is still remarkable is that the pits cannot be filled by running water into them, nor emptied by shutting it out. Th!- singular difference oi level has been utilized by causing a flow ot water from the sea t drive a water-wheel piaced inore of pits. Where the untrained eye will s--nothing bnt mire and dirt, -says 8ir John Lubbock, science will often reveal exquisite possibilities. The mud we tread uoder our feet in the street is a grimy mixture of clay and sand, soot and water. Separate the spnd, however, as Ruskin observes let the atoms arrange themselves in space accord ing to their nature and you have tbe opal. Separate the clay, and it becomes a white earth, tit tor finest porcelain: or if it still further purifies itself, you have a sapphire. 'f;.e the sjof, and if properly t.eated it will give you a diamond. While, lastlv, the water, purified and distil'ed, will become a dew drop or cry stallize into a lovely star. Or, again, you may see in a shallow pool either the mud lying at he bottom, or the image of the sky above. Members of the Microscopical Society of Calcutta have found that Ca'cutta buti'"-always teems with microscopic organisms whea made as is customary, and these distin guish if from fresh butter churned directly from rich cream. The milk of Bengal is mostly too poor to yield butter by the process else (where in vogue, and it is therefore boiled and put aside to "set, a small piece of butter or a teaspoon -ful of buttermilk being added to it. In from six to twelve hours a white acid mass is formed, which is mixed with water, and - churned until the butter separates. The organisms seem to be introduced partly by the w iter and partly by the stale butter or buttermilk, really acts as a ferment, while even dialoms and infusoria come from the water. Eastern corn meal Chaes's. at Kenton & A GAMBLER'S OITFIT. Ingenious l'onlrlvanrci for Swin dling; al 'arl. Scotland Yard possesses a "mus eum," a memorial of Howard Vin cent's rule. It consists principally of ghasrly .momentoes of certain notorious crimes iu recent years; but the collection has just received a most interesting addition ot different kind. Among the efiects of Daniel Thomas Doherty, the American who was sentenced to penal servitude iast mouth for shooting a companion in a dispute over a gambling debt. " were found" ' : the elaborate apparatus of a pro fessional card sharper. The arti cles include a bogus of notes, a miniature mirror the size of a six pence, to enable the player to see the value of anv card he deals, and half a dozen packs of marked cards, in a haadscnie wooden case. The case contains a screw which presses tbe packs so closely to gether that any two cards which are slightly roughed with sand paper will adhere to one another. But the gem of the collection is a peice of mechanism designed to hold a card concealed in the play er's sleeve, and t discharge it un der cover of bis band on his press ing a spring, which he does by leaning his elbow on the table. This is supplemented by another ingenious appliance for a similar purpose, to be worn concealed iu the waistcoat. This is also a men tal case used, I believe, for dealing at faro, which, while apparently rendering it a physical impossibil ity to deal two cards at once, en ables the dealer to accomplish this at' pleasure by touching a se cret 6pring. The thing is beauti fully made, and the American maker shows his satisfaction with it by attaching hi? name and ad dress. My object however, is not to advertise his ares but to warn the public; and the warning is nec essary, for some of the gang, I am informed, are still in London and living in extravagant style, which gives proof to the success of their arts. The Listener saw an instance of intelligence on the part of a dog the other day which was remark able as uniting a high degree of politness with excellent under standing. Crossing the ferry from East Boston, he noticed, sitting cn one side of the passageway, a "ntleman who was accompanied by an immense and very handsome be. Beinard dog. Directly op posite were two young ladies, who could nut restrain their admiration tor the dog. and made evident signs of a desire to be friendly with him. The dog, however, looked up to his mater and de clined to budge. But presently the gentleman remarked quietij , "Go over and see the ladies," whereupon the animal moved promptly across the passageway and wagged his tail amiably while the youug iadics patted his head aud raved over him.- But present ly came the remarkable exhibition of politness which the Listener has referred to. The wharf was reached, and the passengers arose and moved tewaid the street-cars. One of tlie young woman carried a basket, and this basket the dog insisted upon taking in his mouth. The lady gave it to him, and he walked proudly toward the car with it, casting a glance toward his master, who remained standing on the platform. He entered the street-car with the basket, deposit ed it in the lap of the young lady when she had seated herself, and then whiiked ponderously out and rejoined his master. It was a clear case of a friendly service courteous ly performed. A Man With tiOOO Wives. Muley Hassan, the present Sul tan of Morocco, lives a retired live at his capitals of Fez and Morocco, and rare.'y ever appears in public to his subjects, while it is stiii . less seldom that any European can ob tain a view of nis august person.
