Constable (Gordon was assassinated

BlalocK, a teacher in one of the
city schools, confessed to the au

been connected lor yeais with a

sas, Texas and Colorado. Their
crimes include robbing mails,
blowing up safes, sand bagging and
murder. Fifteen arrests already
have been made and information

A Strike Averted.
Minneapolis, March, 21. It
transpires lhat the general tie-up of
Northwestern roads has oniy been
prevented by Chief Arthur's coun
sels. The men have been on
the point of striking for some
lime, but unwilling to take
the responsibility of doing so
without the approval of the
grand officers and support of the
w hole brotherhood. A committee
f engineers and firemen went to
Chicago yesterday to consult Ar
thur. On the result of their visit
iepends whether the general tie-up
will be begun or not.

I have not noticed a reference to
the death of Father Fisher, a priest
who died recently in a little vil
lage in Austrian Bohemia. And
yet this "father'' had been in his
,.fe associated with stirring and
sensi-iot'al scents, for it was his
lot to accompany the Archduke

ition to Mexico, ami to minister to
the unhappy Emperor in his iast
moments. Durui' recent. years
Father Fisher lived in strict retire
meat and tccupied himself in
writimr his memoirs of the in
cidents of which he had been an
eye wituess. These recollections
of his include, it is said, some re-
velaiiaus concerning the tragic end
of Maximilian, which have; never
yet been published. And there
would seem to be some giound
fer this rumor, for the legal re
presentative of Pere Fisher has
found among his manuscripts a
letter addressed to him directing
him specifically to delay the pub
lication of the "Memoirs" for ten
years from the date of the father's
deat:i. The public must accord

A bit of musical anecdote was
told me the other day. On the
first appearance of a famous pian
ist in Boston Mr A. found him
self seated in front of his neighbor,
Mr., whom he hf.d always sup
posed entirely devoid of musical
taste, but who proved especially
demonstrative in his applause. In
the intermission Mr. A. turned in
his seat and observed to the other.
"I am glad you enjoying the
concert so much. I didn't know

ed with great frankness; "it's all

president to-day sent to the two
houses of congress a communica
tion from the secretary of the in
terior, with a great mass of testi
mony, relating to giants of land to
the state of Ongon f.r the con
struction of wagon roads. The

by the promise of generous dona
tions of lands, to promote the
building of wagon roads for public

not yet been built, and vet an at
tempt is made to claim the lands
under a title wuicti denends lor its
validity entirely upon the construc
tion of these roads.
A bill accompanies the com
munication, which the president
submits with a recommendation
that ir may become a law, and
with an earnest hope that ihe op
portunity thus presented to demon
strate a sincere desire to preserve
the public domain ir settlers, and
to frustrate unlawful attempt to
appropriate the same, may not be
neglected.
AN OLD STOKT.
It seems that the president has
just discovered these great frauds,
and rushed eagerly' to the front, on
the eve of an election in Oregon, to
urge congress to pass a bill t for
feit these 'grants. Senator Dolpb,
in the Forty ninth congress, intro
duced a bill, which was referred to
the committee cn public lands.

The Committee of Ways and Means
in Congress has prepared a tariff bill,
which, as had been foreshadowed, 13
large!- a dir. ct blow at the farmers
of the country in its reduction of en
tire removals of tariffs ou "raw ma
terials." Upon the principle, of
equality, upon which all the laws of
our country are supposed to be
founded, farmers should have more,
instead of less upou their products,
which are' mainly "raw materials."
The Gr-inge has always declared for
'equally distributed burdens and
equally distributed powers," ?nd now
is the opportunity for patrons to
sustain the position taken by the Na
tioual Grange for several years past,
opposing free raw materials, when 110
corresponding reduction is made upon
manufactured goods. Ail other in
terests that are in the slightest degree
affected by this new tariff bill will be
heard from at once in Congress, op
posing any changes that will affect
them. Let farmers be heard from,
and promptly. Speak plainly, respect
fully, yet firmly, strongly armed with
just ce and equality. The constitu
tion of our country says, "All citizens
shall be equal before the law." Let
farmers see to it that they are equil
