It is vhe univeisal opinion that the new Chinese treaty will not accomplish the purpose for which it is designed and will not give the relief which the people on the Pacific coast are entitled to expect. Tle- nresentarive Feltm, whose bilf proposed to prevent the coming to the United States of Chinese labor ers, after giving ni tice to the Chinese government of the deter mination of tin United States in the premises, thinks that the pro I Oied treaty will be entirely inade quate and insufficient. Scientific Scraps. The Chinese boast of a series ot eclipses, recorded in the annals of the nation, extending over a period of nearly 3,900 years, all of which, they affirm, were not only observed, but were calculated and figured in advance. The golden age "Chinese astronomv was from about 2837 to 480 B. C." The Bo tree of Amarapoora, in Burmah, is about 2,170 years old, and it can be traced in historic documents as far back as 182 A, D. Other trees are believed to be older -African and Californian speci mens being computed at 5,000years but there is no certain evidence of it. The largest secondary battery yet constructed is probably that in the basement of the City Hali of Paris. It includes 163 gigantic elements, ten inches in diameter and 31 inches in height, aad it yields a power ot 100 horses. It weighs 11 tons, and contains 975 gallons of liquid. Its purpose is to regulate the 2,200 Edison lamps that light the hall of Fetes and the adjacent salons, the" contract re quiring that that the battery shall keep up the light from 20 to 30 minutes in case of accidental stop page of the machines. It is im possible is yet to estimate tlie f ill damage of the storm upon the Chespeake, but from data at hand between 100 and 200 vessels were either cast ashore or sunk, from thirty to forty were wrecked, and probably thirty people were drowned. ' Most of the vessels were oyster ' schooners. The inunda tions of the low lands of Maryland, Delewareand the Virginia penin sula have caused great loss. On the eastern shore people were obliged to live in attics, and in one region vessels were carried 500 feet inland. SIMfEV A BUi SCAKE. Chair man Carroll, of the union grievance committee, admitted this monnng that the reports which he gave to the associated press yesterday were untrue and had been given simply to create a scare through out the United States. There was no truth in the statement that the roads would be called out one each day. This morning there was a iarge defection among the Santa Fe strikers, which was the result of a warm fight in the session of committees lipid last night. At the meeting sixteeu of the engin eers said it was their intention to go to work to-day on the Santa Fe. At this there was a great stir among the engineers, and for the first time since the beginning of the strike the members of the com mittee are out among the men pleading their cause. On the Fort Scott road everything moves smoothly and there is no indica tion of trouble anywhere. The Missouri Pacifjund Union Pacific officials say they anticipate no trouble, arid Have made no ai rAngene.ii.tj;.... lopipg-atf-csus-4 .' strike. Assistant General Superin tendent Spoor, of the Santa Fe, says that his road will be running in good order before night, as a number of men have announced their intention of returning to their cabs when called ujon. The en gineers will not talk, and those the who are managing strike were verv disconsolate over their trouble Chairman Hochkins, of Gulf Grievance committee, was very noncommittal in regard to matters under his jurisdiction, but stated that no strike had been ordered as yet on the Gulf. At 10 o'clock this morning the Fort Scott & Gulf trains were al 1 moving prompt ly and with regularity. The situ ation on the Santa Fe is un changed and there is no switching being done in the yards. Chair man Canol speaking in regard to the published reports of the finan cial strength of the brotherhood said: "It is true there is about three hundred thousand dollars in a contingent fund, but in addition we have a building fund in our treasury ammounting to at least five hundred and "sixty thousand dollars, these can be used to pay the expenses of the strike. There are 27,500 members in good stand ing, and each of them can pnt iu a hundred dollars at a moment,s notice. You can see we would then have $301 ,000 for fightiug pur poses." The Xews Continued. London, March, 17. The steam er Oceanic arrived from Hong Kong and Yokohama this morning with China papers which confirm the disastrous earthquake reports in the provinces oi Ijunan and Stechmen. Several cities were de stroyed and 20,000 lives lost. Ontario Politic. Toronto, Ont., March 17. The legislature last night passed to its sooond reading a bill to establish womanhood suffrage for elections in Ontario. If passed this virtually makes it a law. These will be prorogued Thursday.
