JN FL UENCE CO Ml EC TL Y. If we all realized the extent of the influence that is exerted by each and every individual upon our fellowmen in our intercour.-e with them, much more circum spection would be used. Iso matter how humble our Marion i life, or how limited our :&&here of action, W8 wield a potent influence in forming the morale of ;the eommunitv in which we live. AVe an influence linon our f..n.. v... ...,t..t ' To show the susceptibility of the ..human family to the force of ex ample, or the contagion of sympa thy, as the Fortnightly Review says, every human emotion appears X be traa.smis.st le by contagion ; -And to be alwj more often so devel pnrtJ than, . is solitarily evolved. For once that courage or terror, admiration or contempt, or even good-will and ill-will, spring of themselves in the breast of man, woman, or child, each is manv times caught from another mind possessed of the same feeling. By a subtle sympathy, not unshared by the lower animals, a sympathy vhich sometimes works slowly and '.nperceptii-ly and is sometimes onimunicitcd with electric veloc ty, one man conveys to another. ,s if it were a tla:iie, tne emotion vhich burns m his own soul. Thenceforth the recipient becomes i fresli propagator of the emotion to those with whom he in his turn jomes into physical contact. A few instances may be named to make clear my meaning. The most familiar example of the con tagiousness of the emotions, as the reader will instantly recall, is that of fear, which has often spread through whole armies with such inexplicable celerity and fatal results that the- ancients were fain to attribute the frenzy to the malev olence of a god. and called such i errors "panics." The disasters hich have orenrred during the last few vears in so manv Euro oean and American theaters and jhuirhes afford sad evidence that though "great Pan is dead," our liability to succumb to such waves of fear has not he1!! diminished by modern civilization. The proof of the special power of the contagion lies in this: That there is every reason to believe that the majority of the iiersons constituting the terror-stricken crowd would, if alone, have met the danger with reasonable composure. There is also happily, we may remember, such a thing as the contagion of courage as well as that of terror, and many a time and oft in our history the captain of a sinking ship, the commander of a retreat ing regiment, has, by his individ ual trepidity; restored the morale , of his men. As concerns emotions connected with religion, the con tagion of them has been notorious in all ages, for good or evil, accord ing to the character of the religion quest ion. The intoxication of j the dances of old Ma-nads and j j modern dervishes; the shrieks and self-woundings of the priests of Baal and Cybele; the frenzied scenes of sacrifice to Moloch and the Aztec gods, and a hundred other examples will occur to every j reader. Probably those on the largest scata of all recorded in his tory were the first crusades, when "Europe precipated itself on Asia" in a delirium of religious enthusi asm caught from Peter the Hermit and Bernard of Clairvaux. The outbursts of the Anabaptists and Flagellants and Prophets of the Cevennes, in Christendom, and of Moslem fanatics under prophets and inahdis (of which we have probably by no means heard the last), and finally the revivals of various sects in England and lmfiri,.,. fl,.d , f.rinmnl1S r,f fl j salvation army, are all instances ot I the pait piayed by the contagion of emotion in the religion of the community at large. Every day's experience may supply fresh illus trations of the immense influence of contagion in the development of all human emotions. Nor is it by any means to be set down as a weakness peculiar to or character istic of a teeble inipd, to be Windly susceptible of such' contagion. are more open to the sympathetic shook. Like ships with every sai. set, they are caught by every j breeze. It is a question of degree now much each, man receives ol ! influence trom his neighbor?. Moreover, be it carefully noted, it is only by contagion, and not by a matter of common observation that any effort to direct the emo tions to order has a tendency to produce the opposite etfect to the one intended. To challenge a man to be brave is to make him nervous ; j to bid him admire a person or a work of art is to suggest to Hm to re critical ; to command a young man or woman tojove the elect of their parents is to chill any nascent im linatLn in the desired direction, and t0 make il a duty for Montagus to nal npuiets is to start tne 'loves of Komeo and Juliet.
