TRUE WORDS. , No truer sentiment or stronger j language could be spoken than the following, uttered recently by Mr. Depew : "The teachers of disin j tegration, distraction and infidelity possess the activity oi' propagan dists and the sell-sacrificing spirit of martyrs. Their field is igno rance, their recruiting sergeants distress. Only faith grounded in knowledge tan meet these dangei- ous, ceaseless and co.r ipting inn1 a ences. In the midst of these nerils the sheet anchor ot the shin I of state is the common school, Before the era of great cities and ! crowded populations, when it was j easy both io earn a living and to gain a competence, when the best influences of every settlement reached every part of it, the state met every requirement in furnish ing free a fair business education. But now by far the larger part of j our people have no common ances- try m the revolutionarv war, and a J . . - '. .A . .genexation has come to its majority i , . r, , . . . i whiuh knows little of the rebellion and its results. Coenists from Europe form communities, both in city and country, where they re tain the language, customs and traditions of the fatherland, and live and die in the belief that the government is their enemy. To meet thjse conditio is the state provides an education which dots not educate, and the prison and i e pooriiouse. Ignorance judge.-? tus invisi le by ti.e visible. Turn i the liirhts. Teach, first and !ast, Anieiiua-nisni. Let no youth 1 ave the school without beii g i :ioroughly grounded in the histor;-, i ie principles and the incalculable l.lessings of American liherTy. Let t ue boys be trained soldiers of institutional freedom, the girls ? 'ie intelligent mothers of freemen .uid the sons of the anarchists will 3Conie,the bulwarks of the law." If the truly American spirit is i.iculcated in the teachings of our ublic schools, and the practical eachings of those schools are node free and as compulsory as ossible to every child in the land, he end depicted by Mr. Depew vill assuredly be reached. Let Vmerican patriotism' he one of the fundamental objects aimed at in American education. And let that education be placed within the j each of every child who is a prospective citi.'-en of the country. THE MISSION OF COL. IRISH. Concerning the Washington dis atch published stating that the resident wou.d se;id John P. Irish, e litor of the Alta of San Francisco, to stump Oregon in the roming presidential canvass, the Chronicle says editorially: "For unately for Mr. Cleveland, his jhosen emissary is not speedy 3nough to 'get there.' He cannot lo what he is sent to do for the jame reason that the old roan said lis horse could not trot in 2 :20, he distance was too great for the ime. Our eloquent friend will do ill that in hiui lies, and angel :ould do no more, but he cannot ersuade the sober-thinking, sen sible, hard-headed people of Ore gon that they are being ruined by laving the government of the Jnited States protect their grotv ng industries. They will decline to assent to the proposition that a state having 2,930,000 sheep, val ued at $4,987,000, can be benefitted by a measure which would bring the cheap wool of Australia and Argentine Republic into direct competition with the home pnfjuct. They may call the at tention of the free trade orator, if they will, to the fact that 84,245, 000 sheep of Australia and 90,928, 000 sheep of. South America are grown and pastured on no man's land, whereas their own must be fed from land having a money value; and they may ask him whether it would be fair to them to permit them to be swamped and flooded by a tidal wave of foreign wool, simply because Mr. Cleve land has made an egregious mis take as to the ellect of the tariff on ! the cost of woolen clothes. When he gets upon the subject of wool and iron, however, as he must, in spite of his dexterity, it will be interesting to see how he will go to work to prove that Oregon would be better without her flocks of sheep and her iron mines, or how he will persuade the Ore gonians that it would be good policy to close down the woolen mills at Brownsville and Oregon Cit', and the iron furnaces and other works at Oswego. This will put the gentleman to his trumps, and make him show his best gait." A very truthful lesson is incu1 cated in these words from the Friend: "When we say that the supply is regulated by the demand we should remember that demand does not signify simple desire for an article, but desire for it com bined with ability and willingness to give for it what will remunerate the producer, the greater will be the demand, lpm this we learn the great lesso that everv indi- v-dual is interested in the prosper- ity of everv other individual in the ! community." As a general ruk- j when the term supply and demand is ised, the fact that a great many ! nfluences, whose personal object ! and interest is to fatten upon the proceeds of supply without any J care for the results, is not taken J mto consideration, nor ot tht fu "ther fact that labor inv bears the expense of the that the supply runs before reaches demand. The Telegram contains , this curt j but truthful criticism on law a j recorded in our statute books 1 1 , present: "The change oi a yei r 1 : in raisin; the 'age of protection' I for young girls in Michigan from 13 I years of age to 14, has just sent a ! I b t rui f rnan t( fa cfofa fion : , . , .... ,, under sentence ot h:e. The pen- ,. , . , alt was none too l eavv, consider- i ig that paiticular circumstances of confidence on the part of the! girl's family toward the scoundrel j rendered the crime especially j atrocious. Yet, supposing the child to have been 1"), r o legal pen- ally could have been meted out to i the double betrayer of innocent e i and tiu hfulness on the parents' part." The time should l e I spi edily brought about when the : chance of escape fiom criminal conduct of the sort referred to in ! the above should be impossible by I any hook or crook of law. j NEW TO-DAW O AM COflKX GENERAL AUCTIONEER.
