""IS IT POLITE TO SPEAK THE TRUTH. Very many people arrive at the conclusion that the use of prevari cation to a greater of less extent, is one of the requisites of social intercourse. Indeed, as says the Philadelphia Ledger: "It is a very common notion, though not often openly expressed, that truth and politeness are frequently at vari ance with each other. It would be a great gain to both character and conduct if the delusion of this supposed discord could be thor oughly dispelled. There is no real conflict between truth and politeness; what is imagined to be such is only the crude mistake of those who fail to discover their harmony. Politeness, taken in its best sense, is the graceful expres sion of respect, kind feeling, and good-will. These dispositions are dependent on a truthtul character for whatever value they may have. Indeed, they (wfiinot exist in the insincere or deceitful man. The presence of kindly feeling and good-will never of itself suggests prevarication or insincerity. The golden rule would forbid this. We do not wish to be deceived, to have a show of interest or friend-! i liness that does not exist, to re-1 ceive unmeaning compliments or insincere protessions. hy, then, should we imagine that others will be pleased by the same things? The very wish to delude them im plies the absence of that true kind liness to which we pretend. On the other hand, hjw can rudeness, bluntness, or incivility serve the cause of truth? They onry damage it by making it unaccepta ble. Some appear to think that if they differ from their neighbor on any subject they must either be disloyal to their convictions, by hiding them, or prevaricating about them, or else give offense by opposition and antagonism. Neither is unnecessary. It is not declaring a conviction that hurts the feelings or wounds the pride of those who do not share it; it is the tone of superiority and dogma tism that is so often assumed, the lack of sympathy, appreciation and respect that is conveyed, the ill-concealed contempt felt for those who think differently. Truth demands none of all this. Expressed at proper seasons, firmly and clearly, yet modestly and kindly, its claims are fulfilled, while none of the claims of polite ness need be infringed. There are, however, other occasions where truth and politeness seem to clash, though it is only seeming. The desire to be agreeable and to say pleasant thiiis sometimes leads the thoughtless to exaggera tion, to carelessness of facts, or to absolute misstatement. On the other hand, a mistaken idea that the truth must be spoken at all times and at all hazards may lead to needlessly disagreeable utter ances, which are always harmful. Is then accuracy the only consid eration ? It is certainly the first, but not the only one. No word, however pleasing it may be, should escape any one's lips, unless hon estly believed to be true. This would banish flattery, untruthful excuses, misleading statements The transient gratification they may afford would be more than compensated by the trust that would be engendered. As it is at present, how often is the charm of such utterances broken by the secret whisper of doubt as to how far they are really meant. Yet very many things which are known to be true require no utterance in the cause of truth, while they demand absolute silence in the in terests of sympathy and kindness. To allude to people's deficiencies, mistakes, weaknesses and faults, when no good result is likely to follow, is no tribute to truth, but a great breach of good-will and j politeness." It needs but the true humanity loving feeling that makes all the world akin, and a deep founded purpose to always adhere to the truth, to give every person wisdom to join in perfect union truth and politeness. ED PTO Hi AL XOTES. Indications now point to either Blaine or Sheridan as the next president of the United States. Richard K. Fox, of the New York Police Gazette, derives an income of $20,000 a year, and the Christian at Work is printed on one of his presses, not being able to own one, gnd an exchange thinks there's a big moral to this if you have time to work it out. The coal output of the world is 409,000,000 tons, of which the United States produces 10,000,0:X, Asia 0,000,000 and Africa 200,000. Europe produces 72 per cent, of all, 205,000,000 tons. The average per head of population is 225 pounds per year. The Blair bill to appropriate money to the different state.-, ii, die ratio of their statistical illiter acy, for an educational fund, which has been occupying the attention of congress for several sessions, was passed by the senate recently by a vote of 39 to 2S. It will prob ably receive its final death blow in the house, which will save the ignominy of an exit by the Clove land veto sword. The work of the ways and means committee on reduction of the surplus, as brought out by the re port of its chairman, J. Q. Mills, of Texjs, is simply a repetition o. Senator Sherman's recommenda tion made long ago, the buying uj. of United States bonds. The sup position is that Uncle Sam has been buying up bonds just as fas' as possible, but no forcing of that kind of business is practicable until the bonds fall due. The searchers after Capt. Kidd's mythical treasures will j.rouib'y exist as long as legendary lore continues to secure interested readers and listeners. The latest edition consisted of a party of Americans who have departed for the coast of Honduras to search for buried treasures. It is not re corded whether they prosecute their search by the pale light of the silvery moon, accompanied by mystical incantations or not, but to be in keeping with their avoca tion thev should certainly have all of those accessories.
