tional Anti-License League, is here
to arrange for the beginning of a
suit in the supreme couit of the
District of Columbia to test the
constitutionality of the license
system. Satchell says that simi
lar cases are to be brought in all
the states to terminate in the
United Statps supreme court. The
object is to show that licenses are'
unconstitutional. If this can be
done the league expects that pro
hibition legislation will follow
everywhere as a matter of prohibi

statement to-day that Edward
Barber,a young man in his employ
is an embezzler to the amount of

Barter has confessed to his pecula
tions, and claims that' they cover
the present year and amount to
about $1500. He stated that part
of the funds had been sent to Ire
land and part invested in San Di
ego real estate. Garrett says Barber
has made partial restitution, and
he expects to recover nearly the
whole amount and will not pro-acute.

maniac on the subject of physical
improvement. She persistently

Italy, is one of the architectural
wonders of the world. It has
?n made familiar to most read-'
ers by pictures and by descriptions.
If it were the only example ot
that kind of building, the plan and
purpose of its builder would be
touch more of a mystery thau it
is now.
The date of the completion of
this tower is given as a. d. lboO
It stands close by the cathedral o.f
Pisa, which wa finished in the
early pin t of the twelfth century.
Its situation, and the use it lias ai
wavs served prove that it was
built for a bell tower or belfry,
canipooi'e, to tne catneorai. it
was then, aud is now, tne common
practice lu Italy to build the bell
tower apau from the church.
This tower is built entirely of
white marble and is eight stones
high. It leans thirteen fret eight
inches lrom the perpendicular, in
a height of 183 feet. The question
has often been raised whetlier this
was the result of accident or design
but there cau belittle doubt that it
was accidental and caused by the
setttiog of the foundation.
This stems reasonable lrom the
fact that the upper story does not
lt;an so much as those below, as if
an attempt were made to remedy
the defect in the process of build
iog. Another circumstance which
leads to the same conclusion is the
fact that the largest bell, which
weishs six tons, is hun'' fa' therest

same time. There are two of them
at Bologna, one of them which be-

A citizen of Portland, Me., was
aDnoyed to receive a few days be
fore Christmas a letter from his
sister in the country sajiDg that
she would send a friend, Miss
Cornelia Shock, to spend the holi
days with his family. It , was un

take, but the family made the bst
of it, put the spare room iu order,
and waited for Miss Shock. She
didn't arrive on Saturday, but on
Monday morning the expressman
left a long box at the door. In it
was Miss Cornelia Shock, a full
si.ed young woman nifude entirely
from "shockiugs"' of corn. The
face was made of husks, carefully
placed: the hair was ot corn silk;
the body and limbs of stalks, and
the elaborate costume was a skill
ful combination made entirely
from the products of a shock of
corn.

The Niagara Coasting ulub has
lately constructed a $000 bob. The
large gong is eighteen inches in
diameter aud an inch and a half
in thickness. Each of the sleds is
furbished with an ingenious ar
rangement by which, although the
runners may be on uneven ground,
the board on ' which the coasteri
sit is always level. There are three
handsomely nickel-plated seats for
the pilot, captain aLd rear steers
man. These seats are placed in
direct communication by means of
a signal gong, and by a svotem of
long iron rods both the chain and
scratch brakes may be operated by
each msu. The bob is furnished
with iron guards which "will k :ep
the weight of the bob fr.m the
coasters in case of an accideat. anu
a heavy iron guard is furnished for
the gong in front. All the iron
work, including the steering wheels,
is of malleable iron, heavily nickel
plated. The under side of the bob
is strongly trussed and braced, so
that it will be almost impossible to
break any part of it. The bob is
also furnished with a reel for the
rope somewhat like tho?e usad ia j
the fire department It is twenty- j
five feet in length, weighs 1700
pounds and wili seat twenty-two
persons. It has two sets of sleighs,
one far racing and the other for
ordinary work, which weigh about
300 pounds a piece, and are mar'
vels of solid workmanship.

London, Feb. 18. Cunningham
Graham, member of parliament
from Lanarshire, and John Burns,
socialist leader convicted ot having
taken part in the unlawful assem
bly in Trafalgar square and sen
tenced to six weeks imprisonment
each, were released , to-day. A
crowd gathered around the prison,
and when the men emerged they
were given an ovation.
Editor Hooper Released.
Dublin, Feb. 18. John Hooper,
member of parliament for Cork and
editor of the Cork Herald, who
was sentenced to two months' im
prisonment for publishing reports
of meetings of surpressed branches
of the nation league, was released
to-day from Tullamorr jail.

A man has been standing forth
bodily in the midst of this com
munity persistently disparaging
the women of this valley ; dishon
oring wives, mothers, sisters and
drughters, by classing them with
women of interior quality, and
thus grievously wounding the feel
ings of a whole community and de
fying them ail sucli a man tried
to murder us for announcing to
the public precisely what he had
said aud done.
Tuesday morning, while distrib
uting the papers ou the town list,
our attention was directed to Tom
Williams and his brother Cnarles,
wii stood on the .platform of the
Long Cn ek saloon.
"He's after you red hot, so look
out" said a friend.
As wc stepped upon the plat
form, with our usual quick motion
of foot, Tom Williams, the defamer
and his brother walked into the
saloon. '
After hurriedly placing the
paper on the counter, looking at
Williams, who stood facing us,
aud concluding that everything
was all right just then, we started
with our papers toward the drug,
store. ,
"I want to see you," said Wil
liams, after we had reached the
sidewalk aud were going along.
"You do, eh?'' we replied, turn
ing arounu, and that "moment a
bullet from his 44 calibre "fron
tier buli-dog crashed through our
left wrist bone iuto the arm, felling
us to the sidewalk. Upon rising
we received another in the hip and
retired, badly paralyzed, into the
adjacent diug store.

shooter at the door of the saloon
"I am ready for 'em !" etc.
In a few minutes more he was on
a horse fleeing trom Ed. Allen
and the wrath to come.

was noticeable in growls and mur
murs of charging, but, although
pistols and gUDS were on both
sidc5. no assaults were made.
The prisoner and his friends had
some fears f lynching on the first
night, out the feeling was entirelv
groundless. The spirit of Judge
Lynch is not abroad in this Re
public, and we trust that it may
never he?r a word in Grant county
for that sort of retribution is justi
fiable only -when the last hope of
law and justice has expired and
the community is a prey to the
lawless.
Wiiliams was bound over in the
sum of $3000 which bi.il. at last
accounts, he has been unable to
furnish.
