irrepressible Dutchman, who has
been in lvlk county jail less than
a week and escaped Tuesday,
again effected an escape Wednes
day night, and took- to the
woods with his shackles on. He
was tracked up but at last accounts
he still had the bulge on the offi

steamer City of Peking, arrived
from China and Japan this morn
ing u ith one case of smallpox on
board, and placed in quarantine.
Smallpox is prevalent to a consid

gang secured nearly $100,000
worth ol booty in these train rob
beries.
Rewards aggregating $5006 were
rutstanding tor Cornetts capture,
$'3000 being offered by the railroad
and express companies, $1000 for
the murderer of Gus Lewis, a
wealthy cattle man, of Atacosa
county, $1000 for the murder and
robbery of a wealthy Mexican in
Duyal county, $500 for killing
Deputy SheriffStauley, of Williams
county, and $500 for killing a
member of a Sheriff's posse in Bee
county.

How Hie Emplojes Learn to Speak

.- Sometimes there is a good deal
of amusement at Castle Garden by
reason of the confusion ot languages
among the immigrants. Some of
the ordinary questions asked close
I7 resemble some English phrase,
and when Superintendent Jackson
is in a hurry he sometimes hears
a question often repeated which
sounds like:
'Has Jackson got cher watch?"
It was only a Slavonian interpre
ter asking some newly arrived per
sons their names, the phrase for
which in that tongue is: "Jak sen
usbur wasch?"
One of the brightest clciks iu the
rotunda is a little Irishman, and he
bids fair to become a thorough all
around linguist. When ho can
spare the time he endeavers to in
crease his conversational vocabul
ary by listening to the ordinary
inquiries that the interpreters make
of the immigrants ar.d

as he could understand, "sham
rock." He decided to experiment with
the word upon another Arab. He
gave him the peucil and paper and
asked, "Shamrock?" The man

mediately wote down "SS," signi
fying that he was o2 years of age.

how old he i. after this, that clerk
will say "Shamrock." Another
phrase used by the same enterpre
! struck the Irish ear as being
"McManus." Experimenting in
tl.e same manner upon another
Arab, the clerk was as successful
as belore. the man addressed stand
ing u. and pointing to his wife
w th sundry ceremonies et intro
duction, to signify that he married,
as he hi;d understood the question.
He has caught a few other expres
sions in different languages, which,
though they may not sound very
elegant in English, answer his pur
pose in eliciting the desired infor
mation. "Dirt under your toe, '
for ;nstance, signifies to some im
migrants "Where are you going?''
and "Spit it out,'"means "Sign vour
name."

Salt Lake City Again in Possession of
Her Parks.

To-day Mayor Armstrong, with
the cheif of police and sixty reg
ular and special policemeD, went

land-jumping, and ordered the
trespassers off warning them that
the land was claimed by the city.
The iumpers did not so, where
upon the mayor ordered his force"
to"oounce them and tear down
their shanties, tents and fences,
which was promptly done, and a
guprd left to prevent the jumpers
returning. This was done also on
the Tenth-ward square, which had
been jumped by Alma Winn. The
police hold possession all along the
line. Tivj jumpers say they wi l
ask help of the United States mar
shal. The action of the mayor is
taken in ptnsuance of a resolution
adopted in a secret meeting of the
city i-'uinoil last eight.

England Steals the Kiehosl Pa it of
Venezuela.
New York, Feb. 1G. General
Francisco A. DeSilva, Consui to
this city, from the republic of Ven
ezuela, is in receipt ot information
that England within the last few
days has taken possession by arm
ed forces, of the most valuable
portion of the Territory of Ven
ezuela. The territory is not in dispute
betwe n the two countries, and to
wliicii England has no claim, and
in doing so, lias directly violated
the Monroe doctrine of the United
I tes.
General DeSilva will call on the
authorities at Washington for
prompt enforcement of the Monroe
doctrine.
The seizure was made through
Governor Charles Bruce, of Dem
erear. The territory seized in
cludes the richest gold mines of
South America. DeSilva said that
in it are fourteen mines, the
average production of each of
which is 300,000 a year.
He sas that if the United
States does not interfere the Ven
ezuelans will fight for the territory.

It has not long been known
that theevacutiou of Bostou by the
British troops in March, 177(1,
many of the royalist inhabitants of
the city departed with them. The
fleet conveyiug the troops and the
fleeing civilians proceeded to Hali
fax, where many of the royalists
took up their abode and where
many of their decendants are to be
found at the present day. It is al
so a matter of general belief that
these fleeing Tories took with them
many valuable records. It is not
however, generally known that
these missing records include all
the papers ot the Boston Custom
House, from the time of its estab
lishment to the time of its evacua
tion. Among the papers were the
records of the arrival of many of
the vessels which brought the
early settlers of the colony, and
dmibless included much which at
the present day would be. of the
greatest value as historical materi
al. It is credibly reported that
many of these documents are still
in existence in the possession of
the authorities of Halifax. Would
it not be an excellent idea to re
cover, if possible, these valuable
papers, which it is probable might
be done on proper application?

containing gunpowder, to which
was attached a leaden ball, was
thrown in the bouse of Inspector
Kelley, at Skibberton this morn
ing. An explosion followed wreck

house with choking fumes from

with their lives. The windows in
the liouse of Mackay, crown solici
tor for the county, were smashed
by an unknown person Wednesday

Statement Denied.
Berlin, Feb. 17. The North
German Gazette, a Bismarck
organ, denies the statement made

reichstag providing for the appoint
ment of a representative ot" the
crown prince in the event of his
being summoned to act as regent.

president and Mrs Cleveland will

One day last week a party of
three or four sportsmen from Syl
vania, went out into the country
bird hunting, accompanied by two
good pointers. It was not a great
while b 5 fore the dogs found a
covey of partridges, which was
fird -it within hort range, but
not a bird fell to the ground. This
wu a bad start indeed, but after a
little another covey was "pointed,"
and the huuters each sent a leaden
message after it. meeting with the
same success as the first. This was
getting serious, and one of them,
becoming disgu-ted with the "way
things were going on, and knowing
that if it continued they would go
home with their garnebags aa
empty as when they started, said :
"I'll tell you what let's do. The
fellow that fails to kill a bird in
the next covey that we find, the
rest of us will give him a good
sound kicking. I'll take the in
itiative and shoot first."
This was agreed to. In a lew
miuutes the disgusted hunter bau
a chance to try bis luck once more
and bang away, but, to his horror,
before he could take his guu from
his shoulder, his companions weie
kicking him all aruund the wood;,,
and he had to drop his and beat a
retreat, arriving home a good deal
tbe worse for wear. He says the
next time he will let some one else
have the first shot, and that he is
really sorry that he made any sug
gestions at all, and will hereafter
go hunting alone.
